Thats what i meant by it's a long wait, i was pointing out that the council wouldnt even consider overrowding until the baby is one, how long a wait it is after that depends on the council.

  • I am very sorry to have to tell you this but unless you have a girl then your likelyhood of ever getting a council or housing assosciation rent is nigh on zero.. If you do have a little girl then it will depend on how many downstairs rooms you have as if you have a second room downstairs this will be counted as a bedroom.

My husband, myself and our 2 girls (3+5) have been on our council list for over 5 years and we have in fact got less of a chance of getting a property now than when we first went on the list. They created an extra lower band and us and many more like us have been put in the copper banding.

We have a one bedroomed property and 2 rooms downstairs so we do in fact have according to the council a 2 bedroomed house. The fact that the first room is really nothing more than a hallway and extension to the kitchen (our kitchen is smaller than most peoples sheds) is irrelevant. Our bedroom is just about big enough for the double bed and the bunkbeds. I have to get into the bed from the end rather than the side. We wrote to our local MP who despite several letters to the council could not help and our constant pleas to the Doctors and people like Surestart have gotten us nowhere.

We are now resigned to our situation and are desperately trying to pay off our debts and mortgage in order to find our own way out of this predicament.
I realise that we could infact sell our property and rent, which makes our position better than yours but we are unwilling to do this as it is ours and our DD's only chance to make something of ourselves. Also the rent's around here are attrocious and it would not be so very long before the money from the house ran out.

Good luck to the OP and I hope all goes well with the house and baby situations.

  • i lived in a 2 bed council flat with OH, DD , DS1 and DS2. The council said to us that we would only get a three bed when DD was 10 years old as that is when they said that boys and girls cannot share a bedroom. (this was in 1995). However we phoned local HA and they put us on the list for 3 bed house. After 4 months we got brand new 3 bed house. We then exchanged to 3 bed council house in 2000 and bought it in 2002. In my area (essex) it is normal for families with boys and girls to wait until the eldest child is 10 years old. For families with same sex children quite frankly they have no chance of a 3 bed.
  • Quite frankly, the chances of anyone even those in gold banding, getting a house in 4 months is nigh on impossible as there is just not the number of houses available anymore.
