Double cab pick up on a budget - recommendations please?

Hi

I'm interested in getting a (well) used double cab pick up. I'd like to get an older one as (a) I've not much cash (b) road tax pre-emission scale will be cheaper. I'm not fussed for 'luxury' trim, as the vehicle will be being used pretty much as a workhorse, moving pallets of firewood loaded on the bed by forklift amongst other jobs. Mileage will be quite low on this vehicle. I'm only concerned with functionality, cosmetics aren't an issue.

Can any owners of such vehicles, past and present, advise? It does need to be a double cab though.

Thanks!

  • You don't need to worry about emissions based VED, it's a commercial vehicle so roughly £210 per year unless you happen to find one of the early Euro 4 engined motors that had a special rate of around £120 up to about 2006 registration year...check that out though i no longer have my pick up (which didn't qualify) and the goal posts may have shifted.

    You'll struggle to beat Hilux for sheer durability, but hold good prices used and get neglected by some owners who think they don't need servicing..

    Other makes and types will be cheaper used, the one make i'd avoid is Nissan who have a history (D22) of chucking con rods through the blocks.

    Ranger and Mazda equivalents are cheap, but i haven't owned either.

    On a budget ? check your insurance quotes first.
    Mine was 3 times the amount I presently pay for a Verso :eek:

    Agree the Nissans tend have major engine failures around 70,000 miles, if you have one going longer than that, you are on borrowed time.

  • If you live in London or intend driving into London with it, check that it is allowed into the LEZ as commercial vehicles are included whether for personal or business use.

    Very happy with my Ford Ranger (Mazda b2500) but agree with the problem with insurance, was double what I was paying for a 3.2L supercharged car worth 20 times as much!!! {Does run well on veg oil though ;-)}

    Fortunately for me I live out in the wilds of Staffordshire so no need to go into London!

    No problem. Just thought I'd better make you aware of it because if you didn't and blissfully drove into London unawares with a non-exempt one you'd find a £200 or so bill per day landing on your doormat. THe LEZ is very wide, not just central London. It basically covers everything inside the M25.
