Unauthorised PayPal Direct Debit payments

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this problem.
This morning I checked my bank account and noticed I had two strange paypal payments, one on the 14th Dec for £802.53 and one on the 15th Dec for £2.50.
These payments weren't authorised by me, so I checked my paypal account and it shows one of these payments (the £802.53) on the 11th Dec for a N D Stanley (nick.stanley5@btinternet.com), I have no idea what this payment is for, I never authorised it, I never recieved a reciept/invoice in my email for said payment, which I always have done with paypal, and a reciept/invoice would certainly have flagged it up earlier for me.
I have logged a dispute with paypal, which on reading other peoples dealings with the company doesn't give me a great deal of hope.
I also contacted my bank, who have said as it was a unauthorised DD they will refund me (today) the full amount, although it did push me into my overdraft, so I am going to lose out there.
Has anyone else had anything like this?, how did it work out?, not the greatest Christmas present in the world!
Thanks

I assume you authorised Paypal to withdraw from your account, so the DD is not unauthorised and is likely to be redebited when Paypal tell your bank this and provide proof that you allow them to do so.
The problem is with Paypal. I'd change your password.
This is why I would never associate my bank account with Paypal. Only ever use a credit card.0 -
I had fraud on my Paypal account, £550 taken by DD by someone i knew nothing about. I was refunded by Paypal within 3 days. No problems.0

Thanks for the positive feedback.
As for the authorisation, yes, Paypal are authorised to take DD payments, but not "willy nilly" surely I have to authorised the payment before Paypal can take the money in the first place?.
I think removing the DD option from Paypal might be a good idea though.0 -
With direct debit, you have to be told in advance of any payments being taken (normally 10 days). If this is not done, you can claim a full and immediate refund under the direct debit guarantee scheme.

I never store the bank account in Paypal just the savings so it is used for withdrawals only and not add moneyThanks for the positive feedback.
