Missing mail

Options
My sister and her boyfriend were due to recieve a cheque for Christmas from his mum and the cheque was sent as Recorded delivery which would need to be signed for.

The boyfriend was out last week when the cheque came, so a card was left stating what post office the cheque had been left at to be picked up. He went in person to the post office and was told that the cheque wasn't there.

My sister then went on the internet to re-arrange a new delivery date for the cheque. The day has come and still no cheque. Once again the boyfriend has rang the post office it should be left at, and this time being told the post office isn't for their specific area where they live, so the cheque is still classed as missing.

The boyfriends mum has since cancelled the cheque incase it has been delivered to a neighbouring address.

Can anyone tell me if delivery men for Royal Mail have cards printed already with the post office address on them, because i'm curious as to if the delivery man hadn't picked up the wrong post office card for where they live, and gave them a card which has a post office address on it that was say 10 mins walk away, and their post office is literally minutes away.

Mistakes happen with anything... especially the post at this time of year.

    The cheque has been cancelled.

Can the lady not just issue a new cheque and you all forget about the missing one?

No-body will lose out, will they?

Sorry, can't answer the question in your last para.
  • The 'sorry you were out' cards we receive here already have the post office address and opening hours printed on the back.
There is only one depot for a very large area though, everyones mail goes back there if people aren't in, it doesn't just go to your local post office. I'd be surprised if there were two sorting offices within such a short distance, but perhaps other towns are different.

This happened to me a couple of months ago, missed a delivery, went to pick it up but I'd forgotten my ID so they wouldn't let me have the parcel, arranged redelivery for the next day instead and the item never turned up, it was somehow lost. Just as I'd given up trying to sort it out it mysteriously appeared with my postman, 4 weeks later.

    okay. lets clarify
do you collect your undelivered mail from a Royal mail delivery office or post office?
do you know the 'normal' place you collect?
cards are pre printed but mix ups can happen
eg a van is used at another office for a day and they dont realise it has the wrong cards?

My sister and her boyfriend usually collect such as parcels etc.. from their local post office which is literally up the road from their flat, but on this occasion the 'Something For You' card left, had on it another post office address .

I can only assume that the driver could have been unfamiliar with the area and didn't know their usual post office was up the road, and instead wrote on a card which had on it another post office which is about 10 mins walk from theirs.

    have you tracked the item?
given the item was handed to a PO for retention. it shouldnt really be 'missing'

Try the one just up the road, chances are they have borrowed a van from a neighbouring office and used their cards instead.
