HSBC Double Payment Help?

Hi all
My father had a claim (1 of 4) upheld by HSBC and the payment was made into his account a week later.
However, after a few days the same amount got paid again.
Never noticed the 2nd payment until received a letter from Natwest (the bank who's account the funds where paid into by HSBC) advising that the remitter wanted the funds returning, no reason other then "Remitter request" along with a form to sign and return back to Natwest to send payment back.
Now I appreciate these funds where probably sent in error, however, these PPI claims seem to be going on forever and I was wondering what our legal stand is with HSBC if we where to say that we will hold the funds until the remaining 3 complaints have been dealt with?
Thank you for all your help & Merry Christmas to you all

I think the legal eagles on here (I'm not one of them) will advise that it wouldn't be a good idea. Mistakes are made and they are entitled to get it back, just as you are entitled to your redress. Problem being there are far fewer mistakes made (double payments) than there are complaints. If you hang on to the overpayment you will just cause unnecessary hassle for yourself. I know where you are coming from though

Would you be prepared to pay the bank interest at the statutory 8% rate, in the same way they pay it, until you send the money back?0 -
Thank you. Have no gripes sending the payment back, errors do occur. Merely wanted to check on best way forward as be pointless sending it back then asking same question afterwards where I get told you should have held fire etc etc. As saying goes, if you don't know, ask....0

The question has been brought up in the past and the general consensus is to pay it back, at least legally if not principled. If only to prevent things getting messy
would be nice to hold them to ransom for a change though
