only if they are a limited company, if they are a sole trader then you are claiming from the person who seems to be related to Houdini ( don a vanishing act)

They'd still need to have motor insurance that covered them for business and transporting goods as part of their business ;) Although whether they have liability insurance etc is a different matter as those are not mandatory.

MotherSpoon purchased a piece of antique furniture online - from everything we can gather, the retailer is reputable, active within the online communities, and has been very communicative. The retailer deals privately only. MotherSpoon did not pay by CC (failure 1, no Section 75).

From my understanding of distance selling rules, the retailer is right - the contract was satisfied when the goods were handed to the courier. As I said, there was no CC involved so no section 75. It all screams scam to me, but MotherSpoon insists the retailer is to be trusted (I'm still not convinced).

    How did she pay?
If by debit card or cheque then you can use Visa Debit Chargeback.

No they can't, because the retailer has provided the goods to a courier booked by the customer.

Allegedly, there does seem to be a bit of doubt, and in any case, the OP has not received the goods, if you don't ask you don't get, it will cost the OP nothing to put in the request.

just speaking to a retailer of s/h furniture that sells on ebay and he advised me there are lots of courier companies starting up undercutting each other and then running off with the goods

    so be careful out there
