upvc window boards/sills

We have had double glazing guys around to fit in 2 new windows into the bathroom. They didnt fit any interior window sills and wont come back out to fit them unless we pay another £83. The reaon being is that it was part of the contract. probably my mistake...i accept that.

My question is, where can I buy some upvc window boards/sills so I can attempt to fit them myself.

  • I would try to get the window boards from the same manufacture as your windows as some manufactures use different shades of white.

Alternatively just look up building plastics in your yellow pages.

UPVC window boards WILL get scratched and look a mess. You could get some MDF ones from a builders' merchant and gloss them. More time consuming, but a much better finish.

  • The Wickes link look like they are the external cills, which you will already have. I understand you want the cill on the inside, and I would suggest something like these -

I have no connection with these people, they do have some interesting stuff if you browse the site (I was interested, anyway!)

We have just had our windows and window boards done

If you have told the salesman about them then it should be on your contract and they have to do it
Our window fitters wasnt going to do them until we pointed out we had asked for them to be replaced so they checked and realised they had to

We were advised by several window companies to get boards like kitchen work top it does not scratch( i think they do them in a few colours we had white ) if you just cover it with upvc it will scratch very easily
Ours are very hard wearing and they look nice

Go to your local timber and building supplie yard you can get these in massive long sheets and not very expensive.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

  • had full DG with sills in previous house, never again - the sills will eventually yellow where the sun hits it, whereas the internal window can't be affected by the sunbeams, unless the sun in your area can make 90 degree turns! Also if you place anything like an ornament on the sill, after a while you'll be left with a patch due to sun damage on the rest if the sill, also as above it scratches.

moved last year & had to replace windows, due to lack of finance had no option to have plastic windows again but we had just the windows, no side strips, we plastered to the windows on the returns & used the original wooden sills, which we painted with eggshell & can easily be kept looking smart over the years

    Thanks for the replies.

If i go down the wooden sills & gloss route, can anyone give me some advice on the best way of fixing them?

    Cheers

Every now & then the plastic industry that supplies the plastic for the windows & sills etc has a dodgy batch that turns yellowish….the trade refer to this as “going pink” (if you look at it closely it has a pinkish tinge)
A few years ago there was such a batch…(some chemical hadn’t been added which stops the plastic going pink) as a result there were a hell of a lot of plastic products out there that went pink!...it was an industry wide problem...guess you were one of the unlucky ones!

Stick them down with liquid nails or glazing silicone.

We've just had kitchen done and joiner suggested replacing kitchen window sill with leftover worktop. He did this (dark grey worktop) and looks great. Window sill is admired as much as new kitchen by visitors. I wish now we had salvaged some of the old white worktop which was thrown out and used it for bathroom window sill.
