I've continuously had home insurance for around 10 years (with different providers) and never made a claim. I've never had a certificate to that effect (as you do with a car insurance policy) so can I legitimately state for the quote for my new policy tha I've got more than 5 years no claims, and how would I prove it in the event that it was needed?

Most home insurance providers will take your word for it.
You will need to agree to a series of assumption questions before taking a new policy - one will address your claims history.
If you were to make a claim against your policy the insurer may make checks for previous claims, and any that you had failed to declare may affect the policy or void it0 -
They don't generally need you to prove it.
They tend to check at claim time, so if there was something undisclosed then that would be a problem.
Be careful of the wording.
Sometimes they ask about "losses", so if you've ever rang up with an enquiry about a loss then this could be recorded on a database.
If the question only refers to claims then that clearly just means claims.0
