Car windscreen has small chip/crack plus small bubble, can I repair it myself?

Hi folks,

Hope you can help, I searched MSE but can't find an answer to this one.

My insurance doesn't cover it, I've searched the web and found horror stories re: autoglass and national windscreens so I don't fancy them. Also, I'm skint. So can I repair it myself (so it'll pass next MOT and hopefully won't get worse)?

Car is a 1997 Micra, the chip is 20cm vertically upwards from bottom of screen just to the right of the steering wheel (viewed from the outside) and it has two radial cracks emanating right and left from its centre, 1cm total diameter. About 2cm below this is a small bubble in the glass, 1/2cm total, both feel flat on the inside & outside. They happened at the same the time. :(

Thanks in advance,

Red

Sounds like a new screen to me (that is a big chipand cracs coming from it will only get worse), why won't the insurer cover it? It will cost you an excess of £60 +/-.

There will be plenty of independent winscreen companies that can do it for (yellow pages) and will be better.

Look in your yellow pages for a local windscreen fitter.

£100 top tops should be one man and a van price and he makes good money from it
or go to your local scrappie see who they use to cut out s/h screens and get a price for their man to come and fit it in your car all in

I successfully repaired one myself using a kit I bought on ebay for £11 there are different types on there but I used one with 4 suckers in a cross and you put the applicator through the middle, have a search on ebay you will see what I mean, be aware they cure using uv light so you need to pick a day when the sun is out.

If you have a look on youtube there are many guides to show you how to do it and you can judge your damage against theirs to see if it is viable.

Insurers usually only cover this if you have a comprehensive policy.

To sb, ive never laughed so much :rotfl:very witty ;)......i love your post
  • Thanks for your kind replies. So I can't fix it myself then? lol!

Tbh when my last car died, I needed a cheap runabout fast, and the Micra only cost £600, so it wasn't worth fully comp (and the insurance would've cost a lot more).

Unfortunately, I've got too much to do before Christmas to deal with it right now, especially to do the scrapyard or man & van thing.

Have had it for just over a year, and it's a great runner, very reliable and flew though the MOT, but I'm worried the crack will get suddenly much worse, as I live in the land of pot holes and badly patched bumpy roads!

Maybe it'd be best to off-load it and go for a trade-in on a newer model (another Micra, hopefully).

Do you think it be too hasty to get rid of an otherwise good car?
