Are you 5"8, blonde, slim and with big chebs by any chance? And if you've never had a service, do one asap! God knows what the oil looks like!
LOL 5"11 and blonde actually, but he is still a great bloke!
Service booked in for the NY. Oil will be fine, I let my mate do an oil change at her car maintenance evening class one night as she needed a practice car.0 -

Not jammy at all, you fortunately bought one of the few cars (old Toyota's can stand it too) that can stand complete neglect and still keep going.
Why do you think the third world is full of old Japanese cars or even Korean cars with old generation Japanese mechanicals?
I wouldn't suggest you try neglecting any modern car the way you've neglected this one, you will find out in an a very expensive way that they they don't make 'em like Sunnys, Bluebirds, Corollas, Camrys and Carinas any more.
I feel quite sorry for that poor car, and i wish it a very well deserved Merry Christmas.:p0 -

The fallen metal is the first layer of the exhaust which is apparently nothing to worry about. He trimmed it and did whatever mechanics do to it.
Everything was checked over and it "Ran like a dream," when he took it for a spin. Carb a bit mucky...plugs fine...electrics fine....plus lots of other stuff fine that I didn't understand.
The loss of power/stalling when first starts is probably down to the air filter, although there may have been muck in it which has probably shifted itself, hence running fine with no stalling.
He suggested a service in the new year as I have never had one done, said he will probably have to replace air filter which isn't expensive, but it's up to me.
Then to top it all I asked him how much, got out my debit card and he said "It's on me, Merry Christmas!"
I have the best mechanic in the world, so I am now off to buy him some wine and sweets.
My OH about had a fit because I was 3 weeks late in booking our one in for its service. :rotfl:
Sounds like it. You have a keeper - both the mechanic and the car! :A
May you have a happy, safe, cheap few more years out of her yet. x0 -
Well I just took the old girl out for a run and she ran as sweet as a nut

I am in my 40's and live in Somerset scheming gypsy, sorry.
I have been very lucky with my general neglect of the car, I don't pay any attention to it, so lesson learnt. She may be an ugly old beast of a thing with the handling skills of an elephant on ice skates but she doesn't let me down....unlike most of the men I have known. But that's for another forum.
Thanks again all for all of your input, you have made me smile.
Happy Christmas and a fabulous 2012 to you all Xxx0 -

Any old car that has lasted this long will keep going.
If I was the op I'd keep it, they're becoming rare.
Japanese cars tended to rot away quickly, only the ones kept dry are still around, it wasn't worth trying to get them welded.0 -
Keep it serviced in future

I had a couple of this generation of Nissans. Both were finished off by tinworm at about 16-17 years old or so (actually one of them only needed about £50's worth of welding to get through the MOT but the clutch was worn out, he cambelt was due and the shocks were starting to sag so I reluctantly let it go -- it was a Sunny (1.3) as well with 175K on the clock, and I didn't fancy ploughing £350 into it to get it back up to speed), but the main mechanicals were still running like new. TBH I found them to be less rust-prone than their contemporary Fords and Vauxhalls (and far more reliable). But then I've always been one for getting cars serviced on schedule even if they are worth 35p. I also had a more recent Primera that ran to 265K, had no rot at 11 years old but was showing signs of bills coming over the horizon so I got rid.
The Euroboxes I've had around this age were wrecks (bad engines, leaks everywhere, dodgy electrics etc), even though they seemed better to a cursory glance. I have never bought the rust argument; rot is something that bites you at MOT, unreliable mechanicals will bite you over and over again. I've never allowed a reputation for rot cloud my view of a car as it's a predictable expense.
If it's reliable, look after it, it'll look after you. Not so the newer Nissans sadly, wouldn't have one given to me these days, they're garbage, too much French junk on them that fails.0
