Problem with a fridge freezer - sales of goods act and an engineer report

My Hotpoint fridge freezer has developed a fault after 20 months of ownership, there is an extremely loud vibrating noise which shakes the entire house. It's so loud that it keeps us awake at night when it occurs and it normally lasts for around 5 minutes. We are also not on very friendly terms with the next door neighbour who uses any opportunity of us making noise to justify playing his music extremely loudly.
Dixons said they will issue a repair under the sales of goods act but require an engineers report. I have called around and many engineers have said they cannot provide a report unless they see the fault which is extremely unlikely given that it happens maybe 3/4 times per 24 hour period.
I believe under the sales of goods act that it's my responsibility to prove it's a manufacturing fault, which I am confident it is, it's just very hard to prove.
Any suggestions?

Well done for getting Dixons to agree to a repair in the first place. But I am surprised at the reaction by the engineers you have called. If, for example, the motor mountings are gone, it won't take much to identify the fault. You could call Dixons and ask them to recommend a decent engineer.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0

I have asked the engineers if it's a common problem and have received a mixed response. My issue is that if I call the engineers out and there is no visible signs of a problem then I'll be left with having to foot the bill and will be no nearer to a resolution. The call out charge seems to be £50-60 + VAT!
I can see where the engineers are coming from, they can only create a report on what they can see.0 -
Sound's like it may be happening when the compressor kicks in, try turning it off for a while the see if the noise happens at start up.0
