Bad Debt Abroad

I am owed over £8000 by a company in America. It is over 18months since invoicing this company and when I have chased it up all I get is "the company is in a bad way and hasnt been paid for the work I done". I know that they are not doing very well but there has been no attempt from them to even pay off a small amount or give me any idea as to how or when they might pay.
I know that in this country I could take the small claims court route to try to recoup this debt, but as it is in America, I do not know how to go about it.

Anyone had experience of this at all, any help would be much apprieciated.

Thanks in advance
