Downstairs bathroom - forget it! It's cheap for the reason that it would be otherwise difficult to shift.

I once went out with a chap that was a total skinflint, living in one of the cheapest areas of London despite a good wage...and yes he had a downstairs bathroom. Yuck.

  • We have a downstairs bathroom in our current house. There's a toilet room and separate bath/shower room, both off the main hallway at the bottom of the stairs. When we bought it earlier this year it never even occurred to me that people might have issues with it, but then I grew up in a house with a downstairs bathroom (off the kitchen). It's really convenient for having guests as previous posters have said, and we've not had any problems with wandering downstairs in the night to use it! No children yet though - one on the way, so we'll see how that goes with toilet training etc ;)

It also means we have 3 HUGE bedrooms upstairs with loads of space!

Why do you need an upstairs bathroom? You dont.

You do need an upstairs WC though... Could you not block off a small bit of the biggest bedroom (Accesed from the hall) and chuck a loo in there?

    Wouldnt be too expensive either
  • Use, as my grandmother used to call them, a gazunder.

My bathroom is downstairs but not accessed through the kitchen (not sure I'd like that). We don't mind at all. You visit the loo more during the day than at night.
It was also a godsend when I broke my foot and could not weightbear. It meant I only had to tackle the stairs when I needed bed.
So downstairs bathroom is fine with me but not if accessed through the kitchen.

My wife refused to even view houses with downstairs bathrooms.

I never thought it would be a problem but it isnt the guys who make the decisions.

  • I have a downstairs loo and an upstairs bath.
    Its great.
I could imagine its a problem if you have to get up to pee 400 times a night, otherwise?

I think its great, you can have a bath whilst someone else is stinking out the toilet, no need for guests to wander around your upstairs ect.

I live in a flat, my bathroom/loo is both upstairs and downstairs :D

Seriously though, if you've ever lived in a flat you'd not be worrying about "toilet business". Anyway, if someone goes for a number 2, keep the door shut and the ventilation on. No-one need know... if you're honestly that bothered about it.

I've lived in two houses that had downstairs bathrooms, never had a problem. Both of them were off the kitchen, and didn't have a problem with bathroom smells (close door, open window), or steam from the shower (close door).

My cousin lives in a terrace house with a downstairs bathroom. She's just spent a fortune kitting it out nicely. Much better than losing a whole bedroom.
  • I personally wouldn't consider a house with a bathroom downstairs as the only bathroom and ruled out a lot of houses on that basis. Our house (Victorian terrace) has a downstairs loo which is a godsend, especially with young children and elderly relatives, but the main bathroom is upstairs. When we had our loft converted we had an ensuite put in as I didn't like the idea of going downstairs to use the loo in the night.

If it was possible and not too expensive to add at the very least a toilet upstairs, I may consider it if the rest of the house was great.
