Holidays

We really value our holiday, its our only time of the year when we really spend a good chunk of time together. There is not much opportunity between my husband doing 70-80 hours a week and me working while juggling children, one of which has huge care needs.
We have never gone a whole year without a break of some sort some where. Our last holiday costs us £400 for the the four of us for two weeks, while away we ate within our food budget and ebayed and car booted off a load of stuff for our spends.
Having started out dmp and debt free journey this month we will not be having such an expensive holiday but we will do something. We might take the kids out of season monday to friday somewhere in this country, or go camping for a long weekend in the summer. We will probably ebay and carboot (I have a huge loft full of stuff due to my reluctance to let go of anything while depressed) to get rid of so that we will only go away with this money.
I know that we could use this bit towards our debts but I have already sent off my practice licence to do some extra work self employed, if I can get some this way it will take our dmp from 8 to 2 years. If you want the rainbow you have to go through the rain.

Although I acknowledge that I'm a substantial amount of debt, I live for my yearly holiday as I have a very stressful job. It's a week away from the pressures of life and a chance to wind down with my boyfriend. I realise that the money I spend on the holiday could go towards paying my debts off but I feel that this is worth the sacrifice as it saves my sanity. I always budget for the holidays so I avoid getting any deeper in debt. If you still enjoy going on holidays then go for it and try not to feel guilty. Life is short and preciousBarclaycard £3000

We are visiting my partner's family in Sussex for a few days in January then if we can find the money, a short honeymoon in Italy in May.
Other than that, nothing.
It would be really nice to be able to go away for Christmas in 2012 (we spent Christmas 2010 in Berlin) but it's not looking affordable at the moment as my partner wants to return to education.
Them's the breaks0 -
Although it's good to have a break away I personally think that it isn't something you should do if in debt.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

I think it depends on the level of debt. A long slog of paying back debt for 5 years could be made a LOT more bearable with a few cheap holidays to look forward to, which might put being debt free back 2 or 3 months.
However if you could clear your debt in 6 months/a year it could be reasonable to make yourself wait until debt is cleared.
Different scenarios will work for different people/circumstances.DFBX2013: 021 :j seriousDFW £0 [STRIKE] £3,374[/STRIKE] 100% Paid off

That's why I said personally. I have never been in debt because if I couldn't afford it then I didn't get it.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

I wasn't criticising, just offering the alternative viewpoint.
Just out of interest (and of course you are more than welcome here!) but what interest do you have in the debt-free wannabe forum if you've never been in debt?DFBX2013: 021 :j seriousDFW £0 [STRIKE] £3,374[/STRIKE] 100% Paid off

I never even look to see which part of the forum a post is in. If the topic is something interesting then I will read and respond if I feel I have something to say.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

The last holiday me and the wife took was 21 years ago so we could do with a holiday but with having seven dogs its a bit hard.
Once they all gone then I'm taking my wife aboard and she's not doing a thing as she's earned a right good rest
I've never been abroad so I'm going to crap myself on the planeI'm not poor i'm just skint0
