  • Southport is nice if you do decide to rent, you are outside of Portsmouth itself, but close enough that it is only a few minutes in.

My OH commutes Stoke to Coventry (M6) daily. We had considered the B&B option but he prefers to come home, this means him leaving at 6.30am and arriving home at 7.30pm. Fortunately his employers work a flexi scheme and are happy for him to work a 9 day fortnight. Fuel costs are crippling though and its far from a pleasant journey. I have to admire him, its not something I could do daily.

We came to the conclusion after living this way for 3 months that it will be better for us to actually move to Coventry so thats the plan for the new year I think.

When I commuted Durham <-> York it was something like £250 month in fuel plus hotel costs making about £600 a month just in travel expenses. Would me more now due to the price of diesel.

Even now I'm still paying £200/month in diesel just to get to work, thankfully no hotels now.

We looked at travelodge, booking the £15 a night type deals but sadly all in Coventry city center dont have parking so this wouldn't work for us. To be fair though its probably the shove we needed to get out of our comfort zone in Stoke as it would appear there are more opportunities in Coventry for all of us.

As for fuel costs, yes, its crippling. We actually spend more on fuel than our mortgage so its got to the point where moving is probably a bit of a no brainer for us.

Southport may well be very nice, and is certainly outside Portsmouth.

I think you mean Southsea... Southport is a loooooong way away.

Everyones idea of a long commute is different. One person who commutes 75 minutes would say that a 2 hour commute is too much. But there are plenty of people who have 3 hour+ commutes. One of my friends commutes from Maidstone to Slough each morning. It take 90 minutes minimum and quite often up to 3 hours. He keeps an overnight bag in the car and stays at a B&B if the M25 jams up for longer than 3 hours. So to him his commute is bad, but his colleague commutes from Folkestone to Slough - an extra hour each way.

With a new house and baby you're going to have to commute initially. The financial loss on house price/stamp duty/legal fees/removal costs could outweigh the cost of a move. If I had a situation like yours I would do it - 2 hours is nothing to me - but I'd get the right tool - a comfortable and reliable diesel automatic for the jams.

My daily commute is 4 hours into London and back. Swindon to Pompey would be a breeze, even if I had to sit in a nice warm car, listening to Classical FM.
  • Doh, SouthSea - not Southport :)
But I stick to the statement that Southsea is a decent area to stay :) And relativly cheep.

Southsea is lovely.. But even so I dont like the sound of the OPs commute would just end up shattered.

Why not do a dry run? It's not very busy at the moment, but it might give you some information anyway.
