samsung 43 inch plasma

hi hope someone can help probably something or nothing, i have just bought a samsung 43 inch plasma tv just set it up quite easy plug and play ,initial set up.picture is lovely but have noticed on some channels ie,5 ,12 some others .that the picture is in the centre of the screen with about 6 inch bands at both sides only happens on some programmes .when adverts come on it reverts to a full screen,then back to bands again. on my 32 inch lcd ,now in the other room same channel no problem .would it be because of the bigger screen and maybe older programmes ? thanks for any help sam.

Check the settings for the aspect ratio, and try some of the alternatives. It may simply be that it's not by default set to "Auto" mode which ~should~ automatically change the width to fit the screen even for older, non-widescreen programmes.

I personally prefer not to have the width changed, as it tends to stretch the picture and make everyone look short and fat!

samfrom cas - your TV's probably doing the right thing. Old programmes (bet that's what it happens on) have an aspect ratio usually of 4 across, 3 up (4:3) and that's the shape TVs used to be. Nowadays they're all widescreen (16:9) so the old pictures don't fit right. As above, I'd rather have the bars at the side than fat, squashed people!
They're grey? That's a plasma thing, so that you don't get any image retention or burn in. I'm sure there'll be an option to make them black if you prefer that, but you'll need to read your TV's manual to find that.

We have a 43" Samsung plasma, and I am pretty sure this is normal. We also had to set up our connected boxes to suit the screen, if you have anything like Sky or Virgin it might be worth checking the picture size on those. We have our picture size (p.size on the bottom set of buttons on the remote) set to 16:9 on the TV and find that is the best for general viewing.

Hey Samfromcas,

This would be the way the channel is broadcasting the program. As Almiller pointed out the "old" programmes are broadcast in 4:3 then the picture will appear with a black border around the picture. If you want you can provide me with the model number and I'll happily talk you through the image settings?

Question for the Sansung rep - why did they allow he American early adopters of the PS43D490 to apply for free 3D glasses but not us Brits? It seems rather unfair, especially as we almost certainly paid more for them here anyway. I expected at least one pair in the box, not really a 3D TV without ! Just glad we waited, might only have to stump up another £40 rather than £100 now, but still do not think we should have to.

I got those glasses you recommended yesterday for £20. Downloaded some test video and it was stunning, better than 3d in the cinema. I tried a few things on the 2d to 3d conversion and thought it was rubbish. Will stick to just 3d blu rays in future- but is very good.
