have joined 21st century tv

After my 10 year old 32" LG crt gave up the ghost at the beginning of the year I have been using a neighbours old 26" lcd which is knackered with lines down it.
Well yesterday finally splashed out on a 43" 3D Samsung Plasma for £370 from Richer Sounds. OMG- cant believe how good the picture is just on SD. Have just watched the Rolling Stones at the Max and it was like being there (I was in 1990).
I have just called VM and upgraded my basic tv package to the XL with V+ box, currently pay £28 all in with phone and BB for smallest tv package and will now pay £40.90 for the lot (exc sports and movies) and 20+ hd channels. Can't wait to see HD!
Only disappointment is sound from the tv to my cinema system via the digital connection- it is rubbish.

Wait to see which V+ box you get (there isn't just one) then check out places like AVForums.com for the best configuration; you should be able to link your sound system directly to the V+ box and the quality will be limited by the sound system.

The V+ box is fantastic, BTW - the upscaling of the SD channels is far better than it should be and HD is outstanding.

We have the same TV and we have the optical cable linked to our surround sound, and it is good sound. Mind you we only use it for freeview, have every other box connected via scart (OK, surround sound is about 10 years old, but still give good service!

Did you get any glasses with yours? If not, some new ones have just come out, the SSG 3050, and you can get them for £20 or less per pair. We have had the TV since about May and have just decided we will be getting some of these, refused to pay around £50 a pair previous to this! (Think I've been on MSE too long!!!)

I haven't got any glasses yet as I didn't have anything to play 3d disks on. I haven't even seen a 3d tv working (didn't buy it for this, but it is a bonus) are you impressed with yours and do you use the 2d to 3d conversion?

On a point of order, this century is coming up to 12 years old, so your 10 year old TV is in fact a 21st century TV.

Very true- but the technology used (crt) was mostly predominate in the last century, more so by the fact that you can't buy a crt tv today.

Have seen the same model in 3D in shops and it was very good. Have not yet seen the conversion running. We are hoping the fact that the BBC ran Strictly in 3D on BBC HD means they are going to do it for more shows, but we do plan to use the conversion too.

What's wrong with the sound Jim?
Depending on your setup, you should just be getting the sound straight from the Virgin Media box into the HiFi. Connect the TV up too of course, but I can't see how a digital connection can be poor? You probably won't get surround this way too.

At present I have an old Samsung VM box that is not HD so has no Digital out on it (at least I don't think it has as I have never thought to check) I am informed that the new box that I will get on Friday will so there shouldn't be any further issue.
I have now had a go with a xbox 360 and the picture was stunning. Will get some 3d glasses soon.

just had a new Samsung V+ box delivered. Have unpacked it all and plugged it in and I am now sitting on hold to Virgin to get it activated (22 minutes so far), this had better work, and I hope they answer the call at some point this year!
Good news is that there is a optical digital audio out on the new box so I should get a greatly improved sound quality.
