My experience is the opposite of yours birduk! I did a year abroad and knew that I would need extra cashflow, but as I was in credit at the time Barclays would not extend my overdraft and told me to come back when I actually needed it. As I was going abroad, that wasn't possible, so I moved to Natwest who have been delightful since!

I had the same experience in 2007 [pre-credit crunch]. I moved my student account to RBS.

Now I just need to work out how to repay the £2000 overdraft!
  • I'm with HSBC student account and just got told I can't extend my overdraft because of my credit score. I needed the extra so I can pay my rent as it is 300 pounds more than my student loan, i'm going to have to get more money off my parents, who can't actually afford to give me anymore money till next month, they are paying childcare bills for my younger brother, travel bills for my sister who is in a vet collage, their own travel bills for work and uni as my mum is also a student(this being paid by NHS for her job), yet based on their earnings I can't gt enough to pay my rent, let alone food.
  • This sounds strange. Ask her to go on and ask for the specific reasons from the bank. Or pay off the overdraft she has used and switch banks!
