This is the latest scam from our friends in the insurance.
Have you noticed how these "auto" renewal are never competitive ?, most not even in the same stratosphere.
You can get a buddy with identical details to obtain a quote from the same company for a fraction of your auto renewal.
What on earth do they think they are playing at, YES they will make lots of money. ONCE.
Once bitten Twice shy, double someones insurance, grab the cash and then rip them £600 for cancelling.
You must think we are all mugs.
Trust us, we will punish the companies involved in this scam.

Whilst I agree with the sentiments of your post I disagree with your view that they will "make lots of money. ONCE". The reality is that the majority auto renew.....that is a fact.
  • I don't like auto-renewal, but over the past few years with my present car insurance company, the premiums on average, have been £20-£30 higher on the renewal quote than from obtaining a new quote. In fact, on my other-half's renewal in Sept, it there was only £1 difference. Hardly a doubling of a £200 premium. Your post seems quite sensationalist to me.

Did you ask this in response to the suggestion...

On of the points of writing a letter is that you have proof of exactly what you have asked of them.
The point of recorded delivery is that hopefully you will have proof that they have received it.
It is too easy for it to be denied that a phone call ever took place, and equally easy to deny exactly what was said and by who.

Yeah, because I have already spoken to AA advisors, and they seem fixed on me paying.

My insurance for my car last year was £1,900, I paid it in full, this year, it was raised up to £3,800, but they changed it to pay monthly, but I still dont think paying annually or monthly would make it 100% increase. They tried to take the first monthly payment from my account but there wasn't sufficient amount of funds, so when I found out, I cancelled my direct debit, now I am waiting for the reply from Financial Ombudsman Service.
  • Sorry KD38, my last post wasn't aimed at you, it was in reply to the post by vax2002, who I took to be stating fact about how auto-renewal screws every body to the same degree, when in my household's case it clearly hasn't, as yet.
Hopefully the Ombudsman can help out, maybe you'll have to contact your local CAB office about this situation, or even see if a solicitor will do a free half-hour consultation.
  • Autorenewal is a big scam, I hope these companies should be made liable for getting a written consent from the customer before renewing their policiy.

It is a pity to see a five star company like AA to fail so badly on auto-renewal. I have had similar problem with AA in the past and I was charged a whopping £150 for a car breakdown option which is normally available around £70. I had to send a written complaint to AA and was refunded the difference of the previous year's premium with the current one. Needless to say, I have never opted again to be a customer of AA, given the pathetic and rigid attitude of AA call center staff !

I hope these companies realise how the meaning and impact of "word of mouth" has been redefined due to the online forums.
