Question on car insurance

We are getting a new car soon and for 3 months will have 4 cars rather than the 3 we insure at present. We will take one off the road for this period and wonder if there is some type of insurance we could get for it to cover it while it sits in the garage. The 4th car will be sold after that , so we do not want to start a new full insurance.

There are monthly policies available but you are going to have no NCD to count on it.

If it is never going to be going on the road either being driven or more importantly parked etc then you can get Fire and Theft Only cover or Fire, Theft and Accidental Damage (ie no third party risks). Generally it is cheap but due to the low demand for it you generally cant get it over the internet and whilst cheaper than TPFT etc it isnt proportionally cheaper as their arent as many insurers offering it.

I think the one we need is the Fire, Theft and Accidental Damage. It will sit in the garage all the time. Would I be best to approach our current insurer (NU), or do I need a specialist company?
  • Some companies would be able to continue insuring it but give a discount at the same time.

For example, in your case you have three cars insured and buy a fourth which is going to replace car number three, but car number three will still need to be insured for up to three months. Now assuming you have bonus on all three of them, they may be able to transfer the bonus from car three to car four, but then apply a mirrored bonus of up to five years on car number three (depending on how much bonus you have on the other vehicles and claim history over the past few years). I don't see any reason why NU wouldn't do this.

    Hope it makes sense!

I would be surprised if NU didnt offer this level of cover - most insurers do but it simply isnt cost effective for them to promote it (plus there is the risk people will buy it as it is the cheapest quote they get and not realise they can not take or leave the car on a public access area - ie road, supermarket car park etc)
