Mc Alpine waste pipe make a overflow non-return vale that will fit inline with the overflow pipe.
Or change the syphon for 1 with a internal overflow and blank the overflow off.

On the outside wall do you have a hopper that the water from your bath and basin flows into. If so could you blank off the loo at the soil pipe, and reroute a piece of plastic overflow into the hopper.

  • Seems like I am not typing fast enough :D

Yes there is a reason as mentioned why the overflow does not go out the wall. I assume it is the same reason for the internal downpipe, that being we have an attached garage on that side of the house.

I appreciate these responses are done without seeing the actual problem and I thank everyone that has taken the time to reply.
  • Sorry SaliorSam there is nothing on that outside wall other than the garage. Everything from what I can see has been added internally.

To be honest I didn't even know it was legal to put a downpipe on the inside, still don't :)

an easy way to find out if it is the overflow for the toilet cistern causing the stink

which it sounds like it is

temporarily stuff some kitchen roll or similar into the overflow pipe and wait and see if the smell stops

if it does ......... there's your problem :D

as long as the cistern doesn't decide to overflow in the mean time :(
