Boiler replacement

Options
Hi,

I have a Keston 25 that is forever breaking down and leaking so have decided to enquire about a new boiler. Had quote from British gas today, was told Worcester Bosch won't fit as it's sited in kitchen cupboard so would need a slimer british gas 330 boiler. Quoted £3700 for the job. I would like to get other quotes to compare against but have no word of mouth recommendations, what is the best way to find a reputable firm in the west midlands area. Also is this quote very high?

Many thanks in advance.

  • The British Gas 330 is a rebadged Glowworm Ultracom 30 hxi - you can buy one for around £750 including VAT. Is there any other work that they have included in the quote, such as an overpriced powerflush?

You could do worse than post up the breakdown of the Quote for comparison. BG quotes are broken down into the minutest detail - x for this, y for that, z for something else - it soon adds up.

  • we had to have brand new boiler installed in Octobewr when we moved into our new house - by British Gas - BG Potterton Precision - with new digital clock, new pumps for the tank and new TRVs - all done for 3500ish - so it is a lot but the service, quality of work, after-care and so on has been outstanding.

BTW - the house is warm, the water is hot and we have control!!:j

You could of had a better job done at half the price.
BG prices are a rip off and there warranty is less than others offer.

Thanks for all your replies and apologies for not replying sooner. We never received a written quote from BG despite several requests. We have got another quote from a local company as follows,

    Disconnect and remove Keston
    Make good flue holes
    Power flush complete system
Move cupboard forward for boiler clearance
Supply and install Worcester Bosch condensing boiler
Supply and install new flue kit
Wire in boiler to existing controls
    Commission boiler and system
    Add sentinel x100 on completion
Register with Worcester Bosch and gas safe
5 years warranty with Worcester Bosch

    Quote is £1962.21 & vat @20%

Does this seem fair? Many thanks in advance

    I recently had a BG quote -

    Worcester Bosch 18Ri High - £690
    Vertical Flue Terminal -£261
    Replacement boiler installation - £1207
pitched roof flashing kit - £194
connect boiler electrics and test - £190
    Sub Total - £1852

    pair 45' flue elbows (x1) - £131
    Flue pipe extension (x3) - £247
install white plastic pipe - "22
    External condensate connection - £79
condensate waste to soil pipe - £40
    install pipe (22mm x 3 mt)(x2) - £139
    Minor building work £90
Supply and fit switched spur - £66
    delivery charge - £59
    Disposal charge £49
    Sub Total - £923

    Powerflush £367

    Heating controls - £361
    Reconfigure pipework - £181
    Frost protection - £119
    Subtotal - £660

    Total - £4493

    Less £500 discounts.

How does this sound - The boiler is cheap, but then they overcharge on accessories, some I can get elsewhere for a quarter of the cost. They then overcharge for "labour" and on top, multi charge for this. The best one is the £49 disposal fee - can you see a cast iron boiler and some copper pipe lasting long if I leave it in my front garden.

Can anyone suggest a sensible quote for this job - replace conventional boiler with gravity hot water, with another conventional boiler, fully pumped. The BG quote did not even include a replacement cylinder - my copper one has a loose fitting jacket - he said that a new one would not be as good, and cost 4-£500 in addition.

Compare it to your other quotes i.e. from RGIs who have conducted a site survey and discussed your requirements.
