My mum has received an invoice for someone else

Options
Hi there,

This is my first post, looking for a bit of advice.

My mum (widowed pensioner) has been receiving letters for someone else - always the same name. She's been putting these letters back in the post marked as 'not at this address, return to sender'.

She got quite a lot of post yesterday and opened a letter before looking at it too closely - it was another one for this person she's never heard of. It turned out to be an invoice for a good few hundred pounds from a high-street fashion retailer.

As I said, my mum is a widowed pensioner who does not own a computer or know how to use one. She has never received goods of any description from this company.

This has distressed her quite a lot so I said I would write tot he company and explain she has no idea who this other person is. My mum has lived at the address for the past 35 years, so it's definitely not a previous occupant.

Anything else specific that I should do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • It would be best if you were to write the letter but make sure that you put your mothers name on it and ask her to sign it.
If you don't do this then there is a good chance that the retailer concerned will quote the Data protection act and will refuse to deal with you.

Tell your mother not to worry about opening the letters. Even if they are addressed to another person, simply opening them is not illegal provided that you have a reason for doing so, which she obviously has.
