Santander phishing scam

PLEASE NOTE

This from Santander: -

Just got an Email from Abbey Bank (does not exist - Santander taken them over) - so they are picking up old Abbey accounts and current Santander ones.

It asks me to click on a link and view my Online details.

IT IS A SCAM!

Read this, from Santander, after I queried them about it:

"Please note - A NUMBER OF FRAUDULENT E-MAILS ALLEGING TO BE FROM SANTANDER ARE CURRENTLY IN CIRCULATION.

Santander will never send you an e-mail asking you to click on a link, or to enter, reconfirm or change your security or card details. We will never ask you to tell us your passwords by e-mail or over the phone.

If you think you may have revealed your security details in any way, please call us immediately on 0845 600 4388. We're available 7am to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 9pm on Sunday.

You can also help Santander by
forwarding any Phishing email you receive to:

phishing@santander.co.uk"

I was sent a messge from Abbey Bank (does not exist, taken over by Santander) - had an account with Abbey until 2006, changed to NW. Obviously, they are picking up old Abbey account holders as well as new Santander ones.

Please take care: follow the above or simply delete it.
I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

They are not picking up account holders - they are sending these messages at random to any e-mail addresses they can get hold of or generate. People who have never had a Santander or Abbey account will be getting them.

    Still good advice though

Maybe true: but I know 5 more account holders, 2 had previous Abbey accounts, 1 switched. 3 are relatively new Santander account holders with no previous Santander connection. All received this, one opened it and is now trying to clear his infected PC.

I know several others with different accounts: none have received this.

How many exceptions will prove a RULE?

These emails exist for all large banks. They're sent at random. I get lots for banks I've never done business with.
  • I have had these emails allegedly from most of the main bank (many of whom I have never been a customer) phishing for details, its is totally random, they just hope someone will be caught out by them. Reporting amd deleting them is definately the way forward :)
  • They're all spam and phishing emails probably sent by the same hacker groups to get your log in details for all the major banks.

Personally I would not trust any email sent to me saying they are from any bank, even if I banked with them. If in any doubt, call the number on the back of your debit card.

As a postscript, this is the response from Santander, after I e mailed them with the phishing scam attempt: -

    "
Thank you for letting us know that you’ve received an e-mail alleging to be from Santander. Please be assured that we are making ongoing investigations.

The e-mail usually asks users to follow a link to confirm registration information.

Please do not click on the link and do not enter any information.

Santander will never send you an e-mail asking you to enter, reconfirm or change your security or card details, and we will never ask you to tell us your passwords by e-mail or over the phone.

If you think you may have revealed your security details in any way, please call us on 0845 600 4388.

    A good & Quick response, I thought.
