Can I get classic car insurance if it's my only car?

Options
I have a 17-y-o Ford Fiesta and only need to drive a few hundred miles a year. But this isn't because it's a 2nd car, it's because I cycle and only need it for the odd long journey or when the weather is inclement. So will any insurer offer cheap classic car cover if it is your only vehicle?

  • Never heard of classic car insurance requiring you to own another car but it generally isnt that cheap. Certainly doing dummy quotes through confused.com's classic car page generates quotes with 1 car household.

Depends on the policy, Really cheap ones will require the car to be garaged and not the main vehicle.

Others will insure you with no garage and the car as teh everyday vehicle but it wont be as cheap.

I did this with a triumph spitfire as my only car.
Most are based on you doing few miles, which you already said you do.
Worked out well for me, brought it down from nearly £2k to about £500.

The car isn't a classic car - it's just an old car! Unless it's an XR2i and/or in spotless condition with unusually low mileage.

If the broker/insurer knows what they are doing they will not quote you classic rates - the risk does not merit it. You may find a broker/insurer stupid enough to do this though if you look around.

Classicness (sp? or even a word?) like beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it’s a fine line between old banger & classic treasure.

OP, good luck with your search to find a stupid insurer/broker, let us know how you get on please, it might be useful for others

Yes, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. What isn't though is underwriting results - I've been involved in underwriting classic car products that have been profitable for decades, and I wouldn't let this go anywhere near my classic rates.

I've also seen loads of other classic car products that have turned sour - the common thread on all of them is the book of business getting polluted with cars that are old (rather than classic/collectible), main use vehicles - so you end up just giving underpriced rates to what is not only standard private car business, but the worst end of standard private car business - i.e. old bangers, mainly with no NCD as classic products are not generally NCD rated.

But if the OP does succeed in finding a bad underwriter I would love to know who, purely for personal amusement!

We had a 87 classic mini as the only car, insured parked overnight on the drive, for my daughter. At least half the price of mainstream insurance. Footman James.
Oddly, the next year it was cheaper to move back to Axa.

Footman James are a broker, out of interest do you know who the insurer was mikey? I'm pretty sure I know who it was, it will be interesting to see if my suspicions are correct.

    Equity Red Star.

Just checked, it's not Axa this year, it was Swintons, with Sabre.
(We've got too many cars to keep track off)

Where you right, or would you have said KGM?
