energysavingexp - agreed the parts are sub £1000 and if you have the skills to fit & install thats great. Most of us dont relish the thought of going up on a roof or have the required plumbing skills. Commercially about £4k is the least you'll pay for a SHW system right now. Which still seems to me like a really expensive water heater.
Personally I'd love to have one but not at that price. Max £2K I'd pay fully fiited.

I totaly agree with you if you had to pay £4K or more for a system then dont bother.
what i cannot understand if if i can buy a very large new system for less than £1K and it was installed in 1 day.
how come they are charging £3k for labour thats taking the p*ss
    thats £375 per hr (1 person )
i earn £7 per hr like most people round here
no scaffolding was required because of the house layout access to the roof.
but if you can get a mate plumber im sure he will give you a good price to fit it for you

Bear in mind that this would put you out of the running for the RHI/RHPP grant and payments. However, if the price is good enough, that might be worthwhile.

The other thing to bear in mind is that this stuff requires Building Reg approval (and sometimes Planning), so when you come to sell the house, the buyer will want to see certificates of lawfulness and if you don't get permission, the local authority might come knocking at your door.
