Fleas and Capstar

In the past i've given my two cats frontline but it never seems to work. They either lick it off (pulling weird faces in the process) or go out during the 48hr period and roll around to get it off their fur.

I went to the vet with them yesterday for their annual flu jab and the vet recommended capstar, once a month tablet.

I bought a pack of 6 for nearly £20,still have 4 pipets of frontline left which cost £36 from the vet not so long ago.

I didnt mind paying £20 as i thought it was better value as i could get the tablet into my cats knowing they've both been de-flead for a month.

However,i've read a few articles on capstar which say it only lasts 24hrs and is very similar to johnsons4fleas.

I'm feeling a little mislead now as i bought it thinking it was a once a month treatment???

Has anyone else had experiences of using capstar? It sounded ideal for my two but now i'm not so sure..

I have never heard of capstar, but would think it would be OK if your vet has recommended it? If I were you, I'd call the vet and ask them questions directly rather than getting possibly incorrect info off the inter webs ;)
  • Thanks for the reply. Yeah i was going to phone them but thought i'd ask here first to see if anyone had used it and how effective it was. I read the leaflet that came with it and it sounds exactly like johnsons4fleas,says can give one per day whenever you see fleas on your pet...

I feel pretty annoyed at my vet tbh if this is the case,as i couldof bought johnsons from pets at home for half the price! From what i've read about it they're even made by the same company..

Also,i had a good chat with the vet before she ordered them,so she knew i wanted something that was going to last the month and not just a daily treatment at the sight of fleas..To say i feel ripped off is putting it mildly..

I can imagine how you feel if that is the case, not good at all... I don't like Johnson's and personally would never buy it, I gave my Friday cat some many years ago, correct dosage and it nearly killed her  . I have heard similar stories from other cat owners as well :(

I would be extremely annoyed if that happened to me. My vet is always happy to take back unopened packs if the prescription isn't working. I used Frontline for years but found last year during the summer that it didn't seem to work any more. Unfortunately I had bought the last few packs on the net and couldn't get a refund.

When I consulted my vet she told me that they had found that Frontline was no longer working; it seems that the fleas have become immune to it. She prescribed Stronghold which certainly works and if I don't find any fleas or flea dirt on my cats, then I sometimes wait 5 to 6 weeks before giving another dose. I certainly would not be able to give a daily tablet to any of my cats!

A friend of mine uses Advocate, also prescribed by her vet after Frontline wasn't working on her cats any longer either. It does seem that you need a prescription flea treatment to get rid of the pests. Good luck!

I have used Capstar for my dog, he is allergic to frontline.. It makes him very sleepy but the vet says there is no medical evidence to say that it should.. maybe its because he's not itching that he goes into a deep sleep!

If you treat your cat then within 24 hours all fleas etc will fall off, and in a month shouldn't develop into a major problem, unless they are picking them up somewhere instantly eg other cats, bedding etc. My dog is much happier for it and no apparent side effects, he is 12.

Spot on should not be applied to the fur, those should be applied directly to the skin of an animal - if done correctly there is no way they can lick it off or "get rid" of it from their skin.

Saying that, frontline did not work on my lot this year and I moved them to Advantage that is now available without a prescription from for example:

    http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/Home/Search-Results.html?filter_type=6&filter_action=0&filter_name=SearchTerm&filter_value=advantage&Search=Search

2 sizes for cats (normal size cats and large cats - check the weight of yours)

FRee fast delivery - there is no need to pay vet's prices if it is only flea treatment you are after.
  • I do apply it to the skin but small amounts tend to end up on their fur - in fact i asked the vet to apply the last lot to make sure i was doing it right and the outcome was the same.

Thanks for the link but i think i'll go back to the vet and get something similar to frontline to see if that will do the trick as capstar seem to be just a 24hr flea tablet..I think the best method is changing brands every 6 mths or so.

It's over 10 years since I owned a cat but we used to use those black rubbery/plasticky type flea collars and they definitely kept our cats flea-free. My vet at the time insisted they didn't work and I had to suppress a smile as he held my cat over a sheet of damp paper and furiously rubbed her fur to "prove" that she must have fleas and nothing came out but a few cat hairs. They really worked (the fabric type ones didn't work for us). We used Nuvan Top before that but my cat hated the spray noise.

Sorry if this is irrelevant, just thought I'd mention it.
Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.

Am just rather irritated that I just paid £18 for 4 advantage & 2 drontal this morning before reading this - whereas this site charges "
Advantage 80 for Large Cats and Pet Rabbits" £9.50!

Just discovered they are selling Feliway refills £11 with FREE delivery
