    Perhaps the idea is to give enough time for the fire to be controlled/put out before the heat causes the steel to bend and the building to suffer serious structural damage? If the RSJ is damaged by heat, I imagine the walls above will be compromised and the whole building may have to be demolished.

    rockwool can give you the fire protection, then you can cover it in almost anything you like.
