I'm surprised that I'm the first to respond to this post, this news made my blood boil when I heard it this morning. This country is going through the toughest of times, austerity this, austerity that, the coalition is asking us how we can save money when a £25 billion answer is staring them in the face!

I wish I could say this is because DC wants to curry favour with big business, but it's accident not design. The hardest part to swallow is the chiefs at the HMRC are so fe*ckless, their response that "The report is based on partial information, inaccurate opinion and some misunderstanding of facts" does not even acknowledge their own incompetence.

The HMRC is just not fit for purpose, we may as well be living in Greece. At least we'd get some sunshine.

Got a letter through the door last week from these muppets with details of the overpayment I made in 2007/08 .... £10.25. How much taxpayer time and cost was involved in issuing that piffling amount.

I got fined by the muppets earlier this year. They charged me £400 for not sending in my P11D on time. Except that I had and could prove it. Having gone to formal appeal, instead of receiving a letter of apology, I got sent a revised statement saying that I must now urgently pay £0.00.

The process of minimising tax for big business is now an industrial level activity. We should not be surprised at the results.

It's sad that some of our brightest minds sit in accountancy firms devising ways to make sure business pay less tax, and therefore us lot (the masses) have to cover the shortfall.

There are some great examples in recent years :

    - KPMG helped set up a scheme whereby 4 companies (2 US; 2UK) did nothing but transfer electronic figures between them. This little ingenious scheme generated 40K profit.

    - Tesco tried to do a £5bn sale & leaseback on all their stores using a Jersey property trust to save the 4% SDLT

    - Shell has a company which owns their logo. Every forecourt; every brochure; every sign which uses this logo pays royalty to the company. No prizes in guessing where the company is registered..

    - BT have a company which owns something called Management Foresight as an IP. BT managers can book down creative thoughts to this company as a cost centre. [I thought original thought and BT was an oxymoron!]

    - big supermarkets create complex paper trails to minimise the effective profit on products they sell.

There must be countless more schemes and tricks. I really struggle to see how this can possibly be reversed.

so why dont they make this practice illegal.
sod closing loopholes, everytime one is closed they find another.
just make it illegal to find them .
i`m sure there must be a way :)

I'm pleased for you rob, but how much more expensive must that be than getting it right first time?
