I am surprised at the ignorance that people like McKneff that think that having so little money means you can’t eat healthy! I can get you below £15 a week AND give you 7 of your 5-a-day!

You really need to choose your words more carefully, I totally resent being called ignorant. You need to realise that it is very upsetting.

If you cant choose your words more carefully say nothing at all

Sorry to say maybe you brought that one on yourself.

Yes, you are crazy that it could be done and its not worth making yoursefl ill by doing it.
mainaining your health is far more important than getting your overdraft paid off, don't be silly and
look after your self first, if you go on this way, your overdraft is still there even if you arent

Its also upsetting to be thought crazy, silly and unhealthy for managing on this kind of budget, I and many other people do.

You seemed to suggest that living on this amount a week would at best make you ill and at worst kill you..That was over the top and wrong so maybe you should take some of your own advice.

Of course it is possible to live on £15 a week and eat well..Aldi do great veg very cheaply and shops like the co-op do fab best before reduced deals..I got a whole large chicken for £1.30 and 12 eggs for 80p plus 8 sausages for 50p
I eat veg every single day and don't spend more then £15 for everything.

Looks like people beat me to the response. I only meant you were ignorant in this one area... But you must look at what you wrote to the original poster (who only asked for help):

You insinuated that her want of feeding herself at £15 a week would make her malnutritioned and ultimately kill her. I found that offensive, and was reacting to your comments which caused me offense.

I do not like it when people assume that I don't feed my family well because I have so little money, when in fact they eat a balanced diet which is healthier then most.

Take your own advice and when people ask for help, help them towards their goal and don't shoot them down with critism, and everyone else along with them.

  • To reiterate what others have said, it's entirely possible. I do it quite easily. My chief rules (well, guide lines) are:

NEVER buy breakfast or lunch out, unless it can't be avoided (or on special occasions). I always have a bowl of cereal before leaving home but if I didn't I'd have a supply at work, I certainly wouldn't buy one every day. Lunch I prepare and take with me or have a supply at work.

Always buy in bulk as far as storage and use by dates allow, using store deals as much as possible. For example, I love baked beans, so when I see them on a good deal I buy a lot of them as they can sit in a cupboard and won't go out of date quickly. Same with cereals, frozen stuff (although I have a small freezer so can't go too mad) etc. As someone else said, it's better to budget monthly than weekly as you can get better deals that way.

A lot of people (my sister's one) never understand how I feed myself so cheaply, but those same people will think nothing of popping into Boots for a meal deal at lunchtime - they spend more on one lunch than I do on a whole week's worth (true). It's not really a question of cutting back, it's about changing your mindset and planning ahead. I actually quite enjoy it!

    Good luck!

can be done :-) i made a massive batch of soup yesterday... chillies reduced.. big bag of carrots reduced... a couple of onions and value stock cubes with seasoning i had in the cuboard.. was gorgeous! Had it with reduced bread.. the whole meal came to about 50p and will last for about 3-4 days.. having a freezer does make it easier... but then again mine was free off freecycle.. a chest freezer.. we love it... so all the reduced items that are 10p get frozen.. reduced veg gets washed, chopped and frozen..
Surprising what can be done on a budget... value spag 12p...
I would spend hundreads on food each month... eat out lots, loads of coffee shops.. Ive been a bit mindfull this past 2 months and saved LOADS!!:D im eating better and ive lost weight lol

If you have a local market near you, this can be a good source of fruit and veg at reasonable prices.
    Growing old disgracefully!
  • I do it every week for both myself and wife, and we eat very well, and dare I say it, to a Michelin starred standard :D
