Recently moved... Problems and Using a lot of gas?
I recently moved into a 2 bed flat in September
Ive been trying to sort out all the bills since moving in, Its a new build and I got a letter with date/meter readings on from Bournville when I moved in!
I contacted the Gas and Electricity company (Scottish and Southern) and tried to give them my details but they couldnt find my address (new build) so managed to get the serial number from the electricity meter gave them that and my details in november - they said they wasnt supplying the gas.. but could change over to them
- no idea who was supplying the gas then!
Then today I got a letter addressed to me - but wrong address (wasnt coming up with the address properly still) for a bill for the electricity, so rang them up - they still had no idea on the gas and I got them to correct my address again and they wanted the serial numbers again as still couldnt find anything... seems so strange!
I went to get the serial number for the gas (no access to electricity one) and noticed that my meter reading seems a lot more than the others in the block of flats - all moved in recently (within a few weeks of each other) - My meter reading when i moved in was 160 and now is 400 (Moved 1st week in Sept)
Is that a lot of usage? everyone else's are around 250 ish.... I didnt think I would use a lot of gas on my own....

You have used 240 units of gas in three and a half months. As it is a new build you will have a metric meter so that corresponds to 2688 kwh and will cost very very approximately £110 (I do not know your tariff hence the approx.)
Assuming you have gas Central heating and have been using it for say the last month and a half then your usage is quite normal, possibly a bit on the low side?
You say your meter was on 160 when you moved in, that does not mean that all of the others were also on 160, they may have been much lower, so their reading now of 250 ish could be the same usage as you.0 -
If its a new build then the builders often use the heating to dry out plaster/paint with the windows open!! Its entirely possible that the heating could have been left on "continuous" in your flat which could explain the high start figure;may not have happened in your neighbours flats.0

I found why I was using a lot of gas compared to my neighbours... the central heating isnt working properly!
I tried changing the settings/temp times and even turning off or low setting at night more and the heating hasnt been going off... the radiator in the hallway is hot or warm all the time even if I turn the heating off on the dial thing! Have had to turn it off at the boiler now at night (means waking up a bit cold, until i turn it back on)
Going to contact the landlord (bournville) soon as they are back (Tuesday) - rang the other day but not back till then!
Dreading getting the gas bill now and how much it is going to be! - Wish i had noticed earlier so wasnt using so much gas over the past 4 months! eek
