HSBC repaid us twice by mistake!

Hi forum users, we have successfully claimed PPI back from HSBC and we received our payment on the 9th of december. we have just had a phone call from them telling us they have paid us a duplicate payment on the 16th by mistake and want us to pay it back! I have checked our account and it is correct we have received 2 payments on the dates they say, however we arent willing to pay anything back until we get a letter of confirmation. Has anyone else had this happen to them? also would you delay the payment, after all it's taken 3 months for them to pay us out!
any advice much appreciated

  • I think asking them to confirm their request in writing is perfectly reasonable, after all you have to be careful about potential fraudsters. Repaying them within 28 days of receipt of their letter seems acceptable. You could cover yourself by sending them a letter to this effect.
  • thankyou for that, funny how it takes them ages to pay back what is rightfully ours but they want us to pay them back immediately! the girl on the phone says there are a lot that this has happened to in the last week. I must admit I was a bit suspicous until I checked our account and what she said was correct.
  • Hello i recently recieved a BACS payment from Lloyds for my PPI claim. After a very long wait and numerous phone calls and emails it arrived in my natwest account on the 25th August. I then recieved a letter on the 19th December explaining because of the late payment Lloyds have added interest onto my PPI claim. I thought this would arrive in my natwest account the same way. On the 9th January i decided to check my old Lloyds account which i havent used in ages and have been meaning to close down. To my shock Lloyds had paid the full PPI claim again and interest on top. Now i do have other claims with them but im pretty sure this isnt for them. I since emailed Lloyds and Phoned them but no reply and couldnt get threw on the phone. What do i do now the 2nd payment was made on the 23rd December, i dont want to spend any of it just in case and have put it in a savings account. If anyone could help please
