family fund will help with holidays etc but u need to recive dla
  • You do not need to receive DLA for a child, but the Family Fund may suggest that you apply. In the OP's friend's case, the child receives DLA HRC anyway. Even if a child does receive DLA, the Family Fund can and do turn down some applications. I know a child with a learning difficulty and severe hearing loss, but the mother was told that her child was not disabled enough for the Family Fund to help - yet the child attends a special school. I don't know if it is still the case, but when we first applied, a FF visitor came out to meet us and assess our situation. As my son greeted her with projectile vomit, she commented that she could understand why we had applied for a washing machine! My son has multiple and complex needs and we were accepted straight away. Once you have received help once, you can usually get a grant each year after that, until the child is 17, if the family still meets the criteria. more information in this link:

I heard that the FF will now only give out Haven vouchers if you apply for a holiday. I dont know how accurate that is?

OP, your friend may be able to claim compensation for the accident for her son which i believe can be put away for his future and wouldnt affect his benefits.

Even though he is at school he has constant appointment and picks up every bug going and is off/in hospital very often.
    Hi OP,
she may qualify for a rebate on her travel expenses (including car parking charges) to hospital appointments (not emergency admissions), due to low income.

This is the link for details

If she's entitled she can claim from the hospital itself when she goes.
She can also backdate her claim for 3 months - details are on the above link.
