TRV's cut off HW flow to radiators rather than them reaching full temperature -> thermostat detecting drop in temperature and sending a call for heat to the boiler, opening all the TRV's fully would solve this pulsing.
    Agree.
However, the OP said the thermostat shows that it is calling for heat yet the boiler is off?
boiler won't respond if overheat stat has operated. Perhaps OP has turned up the boiler control to max in an attempt to force the rads to work in which case they need to turn it down again.

Methinks OP has parts of his system fighting other parts of his system.

Is the hot water working correctly, or do you think it is?

Do you get any banging noises from the boiler when hot water is run?

Sounds like a circulation problem to me. Pump, stuck diverter valve or maybe system sludge would be my first thoughts.
  • Hi...your landlord is responsible for maintaining the CH system. Call him/her about these problems....one of which is the fact that the boiler is a Halstead. While the RGI is there, ask him/her to explain how the system operates.

Whilst this is true OP could possibly have had their system functioning last evening by doing what was requested in Post 2. This is obviously the course of action if the possibility of something more serious or complex emerges. Ho Hum.

  • thanks for all the replies, we'll try the suggestions and see how we get on.

I'm not sure of the make and model of system timer, I'll need to check when I get home.

Hot water runs fine, no problems with it at all, no strange noises from the boiler when it is running (touch wood!).

My next plan of action is to contact our landlord, but I just thought I'd ask on here in case there is something we can do ourselves first.

which will be the correct thing to do.

Yes there is. Turn down the boiler stat to wherever it was before you turned it up to "high". I know you haven't said you have done this but my gut feel is that someone probably has. Open up all the TRVs to max. Get the system warmed up and tell us what happens. See Post 2. In the meantime 24 hours has gone by.

    Cheers
