Blocker Radiator

One of my radiators are cold in my office, brrrr.

I've tried bleeding it, but no air comes out of it. Both the 'in' pipes and the 'out' pipes are hot. It has a thermostat on it, turned up.

Any ideas? Are there any other valves, I could look at on it?

Thanks

Two potential problems - firstly the thermostat might be sticking and although you turn it, the valve on the radiator isn't opening. You should be able to remove the thermostatic bit and gently press the "pin" in the radiator valve in and pull it out to free it off. Do this gently and it may release the hot water into the radiator - at this point you can put the thermostat bit back on.

Alternatively the out valve may be closed - remove the cover and use small spanner to ensure the valve is open. Be careful with this as the out valve helps to control the balance of where water goes in the system - it won't therefore necessarily be fully open and if it isn't the cause of the problem it needs to go back to its current position - remember how many turns etc you make so you can put it back.

  • Is it easy to get the thermostat off? Just looks like I need some large pliers to unscrew it!
  • Not an expert, but I had a similar prob and yours could be just blocked up with sludge, in which case it'll need removing and flushing out.

I'm assuming you are in your 'own' office, not a 'works' one? If it's a works one then surely it's up to them to get you all warm and toasty again! ;)

But don't just get the pliers on the valves without turning them off or you'll have water everywhere! You actually are best off using open ended or adjustable spanners for unscrewing valves - but if you aren't sure what you are doing it's best left to someone else. I bent a pipe once trying to remove the TRV - which led to a constant leak.

Deffo worth a go of what Weston Dave says though - he sounds more knowledgeable than me! :D

I'm sure someone else will be on here soon with more advice for you.

    Good Luck!

P.S in the meantime why not get yourself one of those electric Halogen heaters for temporary warmth - they are only a tenner from Wilko's, Poundstretcher, Instore etc :)

    Hi

When you say you have bled the rad and 'nothing comes out' do you mean nothing? as in no water or air?
The fact that both flow and return are hot suggests that you have some flow through the rad even if it's only the bottom 2" Is any of the rad hot/warm?
Possible blocked air vent. If so turn off the valves at each end , take out the vent pin and use one of your office paper clips opened up to poke in the hole.Hopefully something should happen.!! Either way put the vent back in and turn on the rad valves.Vent again.
    Hope that helps.

A 'works' one, I tried to get them to fix it last year...still waiting. Just thought I'd ask, in case it was something simple.

No water, a tiny bit of air...then nothing. Some of it is hot, but only the bottom right hand side about 3" up.
