issues with second hand car
Hi all
I bought a second hand car from a trader i found on auto trader
Was fine for the first few days then it wouldnt start today, jump start and its fine, lunch time today, its no good and needs jump starting again
It was fitted with a new battery a week ago so clearly altenator or electrical leakage is the issue
now to my point
i bought the car from a company 50+ miles away so now i have to take it back soon and that means a long trip
Should they compensate me in any way? i know i took the decision to view and purcahse from 60 miles away but i did not for see issues so soon
I have RAC 12 month warranty as most used cars are sold with but the more i look into this warranty the less it seems worth. but tat was standard issue on all used cars they sell

if the car is drivable and doesnt stall, then take it back.
i guess the peice of paper you were issued called warranty dont cover alternators?
if you call the garage they may agree for you take take to a local independant garage for inspection or test of the alternator then authorise the repair to limit inconvienience to you.
communicate with the trader, you maybe pleasantly suprised.0 -
well they have been very helpful so far and considering it was fine when they tested after the new battery and i picked it up and started it fine, went the shops and again it was fine then drove all the way and still it was good untill today!
I have agreed i will drive down to them to drop it off and collect a courtesy car then await their contact
I will kick up a fuss if i have to go again, i work 9 to 5.30 so i have to leave the house at 7am tomorrow to get to them and back for work at 9, long day!
I guess i am asking is if it fails again at a later date then where do i stand? Are they likely to accept another garage fixes and they pay or could i get petrol money out of them?0 -
Hopefully, so far your dealer seems to be working as he should with the problem. Hope it is sorted out.
But your story should act as a warning to people about buying a car from a dealer many miles away from your home. Your 50+ miles isn't too bad, but even a trip there and back is 100+ miles. Those who buy a car from a dealer 200 miles away seem to forget that a round trip to get a problem sorted will be 400 miles plus. That's when problems start, and buyers start moaning about their rights and problems.
Always remember there are hundreds of thousands of cars out there for sale, and if you see one you like 200 miles away, there will be a similar one much near home. You just have to look. :xmassign:"There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". I see your point but also see it from my side
I look on auto trader and keep expanding the distance filter to search further a field and then i find more cars that suit my spec
If i was to purchase the cars closer to home I would have spent more money, or spent the same and got less, i wanted low milages, low owners and a good age
I was prepared to travel to get this but question the travel to have it repaired by them under warranty
If my Phone breaks that I purchased from Orange they have sent a courier to collect as it was a warranty issue. I was not expected to take the phone to them
Yet the car I am expected to take it persoanlly and get shoved a little crappy courtesy car!
Well i am playing nicely at present but if I have to return again am I in my right to ask petrol money etc
They have the csr in the workshop now and I have listed 4 issues I have noticed after driving it0 -
ok, now i have a water leak which i was assured was rectified prior to my initial collection of the car as well as a few other issues that still haven't been rectified from my inital requests
I parked it out of the garage last night and it leaked water into the interior
What are my rights here as this means another 60 mile round trip to drop off and again to collect all whilst i am shoved in a tiny courtesy car that does allow the seat height ot go down so it hurts my back being 6'2"0 -

Nature of the beast i'm afraid, you went further to save money, some times it pays sometimes it doesn't. The dealer sounds like he is willing to fix the issue and give you a courtesy car (which they don't have to). When you bought the car did you discuss how warranty work would be carried out or did you just expect the dealer to come and collect the car??
Most people who buy from a distance away either live with that fact and deal with it or they have two options, knock the price down and not bother with the warranty or arrange to have the warranty work carried out locally. Communication is key!!
Sending a phone back costs a few £ sending a car costs a few hundred, what if the dealer pays to have the car collected to find nothing wrong with it, why should the dealer be expected to pay that cost?? Whether you bought used or new you would still be expected to get the car to the dealership in most cases.ok, now i have a water leak which i was assured was rectified prior to my initial collection of the car as well as a few other issues that still haven't been rectified from my inital requests

Your rights are to take it back to the dealer, let them inspect and repair it. Discuss with the dealer that your not happy about having to bring it in for something you were assured was fixed prior to collection and go from there. They maybe wiling to cover petrol costs they may not.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -
The water leak is a different issue - especially if you have it in writing that it should have been fixed.
The battery going flat could be something really obvious like the courtesy light in the boot being in the on position! Worth checking for some simple things like that before taking the time to drive it back (although the new issue changes things a tad).
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0
