Monthly dual fuel payment gone from £50 to £230.00

Does this sound right?, just recieved a notification that our payments will be going up from £50 mnth to £230.00 a mnth, just took another reading and from date of last bill to today it works out we have used 500 units of elec in the last 2 weeks.
We live in a 3 bed semi, electric shower, electric oven, 3 computers, 3 maybe 4 tv's on in the evening etc.Does that sound about right consumption for a 3 bed semi or is it excessive?
I just dont know what to do next

no our heating is central heating via a 2 year old combi boiler, and we werent in debt in fact we were in credit by about £600 so our payment came down a little, im more worried about the consumption because i guess if the readings are right thats what the meter says we have used, i was wondering if maybe there could be something wrong with the meter or electric shower or something, maybe I'm just clutching at straws

That is high usage for 2 weeks, average is around 70 a week but yours will probably be higher due to your lifestyle (teenagers ?). Have your bills been estimates (there will be an E after the reading) as £50 is quite a low DD for a family. You need to give your actual consumption for a whole year to make any real sense of what you are using and what DD you should be paying. Take daily or at least weekly reads to see what is really happening.
  • when you say you took the reading off your last bill was it an estimate reading or actual.
when you took the last reading take another now and see what you have used if you are using 30 + units a day thats a lot
im at home all day in a 3 bed detached house and im using 9-11 kwh per day.

Are those computers turned off when not in use or left on 24/7? Left on they could easily consume the lions share of 500 units in two weeks. Buy a cheap energy monitor so you can see your consumption in real time then you can systematically identify how much each appliance is using.
  • That is a lot I should contact them, even at that rate 500w a fortnight paying 10p/kw would only be £100 a month and you wont use that in the summer, source of problem teenagers in the shower they take hours :-)
