Automatic updates to IE from 2012

Microsoft has revealed its plans to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer (IE) available for their PC from next month.

The software giant said the move is aimed at making sure that Windows customers have the most up-to-date and safest browsing experience possible, where protection is offered against malicious software used by cyber criminals.

Ryan Gavin, Microsoft's IE boss, wrote in a blogpost: "The web overall is better - and safer - when more people run the most up-to-date browser."

With automatic updates enabled, customers will be upgraded to future versions of IE silently and without the involvement of the user. This is aimed at helping prevent cyber criminals from tricking people into installing fake updates.

Old or outdated versions of a browser leave a considerable number of users vulnerable to hackers, according to the latest Microsoft Security Intelligence Report.

However, Microsoft said it has no plans to force people using IE to upgrade their browser if they really don't wish to. Customers who had earlier declined to install IE8 or IE9 through Windows Update will not be automatically updated. They are allowed to uninstall updates or can opt out.
