Home insurance exclusion - lawn mower?

Good afternoon people and an early 'Merry Christmas'

I wonder if anyone can help me, I have been trawling the internet for contents insurance quotes and decided that i should ring the chosen insurer first to make sure that my ride-on lawn mower is covered (as my previous Insurers specified this), lo and behold, despite the policy wording saying 'mechanically propelled motorised vehicles are excluded EXCEPT for domestic garden machinary' it is NOT covered!!!! I have phoned 3 insurers and they have all said the same, I have asked them nicely to perhaps re-word their policy documents as it could be interpreted that it is infact covered as its 'domestic garden machinary'.

I am at a loss now, unless i phone every single insurer out there, I may have to go back to my old insurance company who were charging 4 times the amount that I could find on the tinternet.

Does anyone know of any flexible insurers or have had a similar experience???

  • You could look at the more mid net worth where this type of kit is probably more likely (eg Hiscox) or those targeting more rural people (NFU) though cannot say for certain if either do actually cover it or not
  • Thank you, Hiscox came up on the compare site, probably the most expensive tho, so havent looked at this yet, I am currently trying to get a specialist quote from Alan Boswell but would think that this is going to be extortionate.

Who would have thought (in this day and age) that something so common would be excluded from a contents policy (although i doubt many people realise this exclusion applies as its very badly written in the policy booklet)

    that something so common

    Ride-on lawn mower? common?
    hmm........not on most housing estates.

hiscox are excellent, so do have a look at their cover even if they are more expensive.
We have all our valuable coevred anywhere in the world, not just a tiny limiot for travelling that most people would exceed with a wedding/engagement ring.
  • Hiscox will always be expensive because they are an all risks policy, £12,000 per item unspecified limit, matched set cover, trace and access etc

So if you had a pair of £10,000 earrings and lost one of them then Hiscox wouldnt have had to remember to declare them or fixed their value beforehand etc and would get a cheque for £10,000 where as with a standard policy you may firstly struggle insuring them even after declaring it, remember to update the value annually depending on how prices move and if you lost one you'd get £5,000 as no cover for sets so only the one you've lost is paid for.

Of cause many people dont have £10,000 earrings and accept the risk of having to pay to find burst pipes etc in exchange for lower premiums

Try ringing again as it's not uncommon for the fairly untrained call center staff to give the wrong answers out as they often have little understanding of what they are actually selling so an unusual question about a ride on lawn mower may confuse their limited knowledge

Some of the policies I've dealt with have similar (if not identical) wording and I've always covered ride on lawnmowers with that wording.

    Try sainsburys.

They have a similar phrase, but seem better quality than most insurers policies, without the cost of Hiscox.

Have you tried asking a proper insurance broker? it might be possible to insure your mower on a stand alone policy. Admittedly these are usually bought by places like bowling greens and football clubs but the broker can put your needs direct to one of the companies that offer to cover these - your unlikely to find anything online. I've often found my small local broker a help when its an odd insurance need, like having a charirty event.

Maybe they are classing it as a vehicle since it's a ride-on?

Hiscox dont price themselves to try and beat the other cheap policies with so much removed to allow them appear at the top of the price list. You get what you pay for.

You buy Hiscox because you want comprehensive cover and know that if you have a claim you will get paid out.
