Had a nightmare with our keyfob for the Saab. Miles from home(where the spare was). Keyfob decides not to work, didn't get given the skeleton key when we bought the car. Got a lift to local halfords for a replacement battery, no joy, the thing still wouldn't work. Got local breakdown people out, curtesy of Green Flag. Guy was trying everything possible to get into the car. Really starting to panic now, as the keyfob in a Saab is also the ignition key.

Ended up having to break the back window, climbing in, hoping that the key would still work in the ignition. Thankfully it did. Or we would have had to have been towed the 400 miles or so to get home  Not pleasant driving up the M6 with a sheet covering the back window

Expensive lesson learned. Take the spare keyfob in handbag when OH wants to take me a road trip

Best bit is, he put the keyfob in his pocket when we arrived home, bent over to get some stuff from the back seat.... and you guessed it, the bl**dy thing starting working again!!!! Grrrrr

    Best bit is, he puts

So I go another few miles to the nearest town centre to Timpsons and guess what? They will only do this job at their branch in Solihull and you have to be there with your car, with all your papers and then if you scratch your head and sing Yankee doodle dandee they

    thanks for that
im in the trade and timpsons knew this when i went to them, they treated me like something on your shoe, i thought it was just me but you have now reaffirmed my belief that i dont recommend them again like i have not this last 5 years+
    they can stick to shoes

If the buttons get pressed too often while you are away from the car it will loose syncronisation and stop working. When it does this as you found the only way in is to use the pull out key. Putting the key in the ignition resets it and that's why it started working again.

Had pressed it once to get into car for flask, went up to my hosts flat to fill the flask and grab the other bits we had to take on journey, locked it, came back down and it wouldn't work. So can't really say it had been pressed away from the car, unless while it was in OH pocket.

Any ideas if we would be able to buy a spare key for the passenger door (where the actual key hole is) or would it require putting on a new lock?

Why do you need a new key? Either replace the battery in the fob or take off the cover and use the emergency 'normal' key that is normally hidden in the fob to open the door.

Wasn't sure if that was aimed at me or not, the saab key doesn't have a key hidden inside the fob. It should have been supplied with a normal key though, where you can unlock it through the passenger side should the fobs fail. That's the key I was asking if it could be replaced or whether to replace the lock :) The fob is the key that starts the engine iykwim.

Edit : It's like the 3rd pic on this link

Whereas it looks like a normal keyhole in the passenger door, underneath a plug

You can order a key from the main dealer.

That's the answer I was hoping for :) Would have saved a small fortune if we'd had the spare normal key :) Not to mention the 2 hours onto our journey waiting for breakdown man to arrive and fix.

I would do it sooner rather than later as all the SAAB dealers will be shutting up shop soon I imagine.
