Both should charge the same, they used to.
Why do you think they should charge the same?
The solicitor works in his office, charges the client for every hour he works, and gets paid regardless. Nobody invites three different solicitors to their home to pitch for business.
The EA travels to every client's home, to every prospective client's home, sometimes has to take viewers to the client's home, spends time with buyers who don't buy, and sometimes doesn't get paid at all.
Who's taking more risk?0 -
You're better off having the peace of mind of a law firm who have a physical office you can go to if needed, in my opinion. There are plenty of solicitors who are happy to do everything over the phone and by post and email if you want to use a cheaper firm outside your area, but still driveable if need be.
I would never entrust something like this to a PO Box address and an 0845 phone number.0 -
I used conveyancing direct which were very good (bar nagging them a bit to get things done).
Luckly they are based in glasgow so could nip down to offices to drop off signed documents etc.
Very handy having email contact all the time and cheaper than other quotes i got.0 -
you are losing me, what are we talking about?
Which bit are you having trouble following? You have read the whole thread, haven't you?
Picking up from the start of what you quoted; You suggested EAs and Solicitors should charge the same. Why?
Following on from this, I suggest that it's not part of your Modus Operandi to be invited to prospective clients' homes to present your services and make a pitch for their business in competition with three or four other solicitors, is it? Your clients come to you, don't they?
Once you have them signed up as a client, everything you do is from your office. There's no travel involved to the client's home, is there? They come to your office for all interaction.
etc etc
My suggestion is that in comparison with an EA, you get paid by the hour, or at an agreed rate, and you get paid regardless. However, the EA commits to speculative appointments which don't result in any business for them, spends time with buyers who don't buy, and - at the end of the day, if the client changes their mind about selling, doesn't get paid at all. So why should they get paid the same as you?
