Thanks for all your helpful replies.

I like the look of the Ignis and it has very good write ups.

I would probably go for the 1.3 petrol - I mainly use it around town and a small commute to work each day. Possibly a longer journey once a month.

Can any Ignis owners advise on service interims and approx cost of a full service. Also I couldn't find the tax and insurance bands for it.

What I'm thinking of doing is getting rid of the Polo whilst it's still got MOT on it and saving up for an Ignis, preferably one with full service history.

What's the paintwork like on them? Are they prone to rust in any areas?

I'm looking at the hatchback version but also notice they have an estate version.

No, no rust reported by owners, £130 VED/year

Servicing once a year for 100 to 150 squids depending on major or minor.

Would agree with avantra's answers and to add that I haven't had any rust problems either.
I pay about £120-odd for a Bosch garage to do a full service.
Only had to replace the usual wear and tear parts such as brake pads and disks, one wheel bearing.

    Nice and nippy car :)

The only things we didn't like about the Ignis was on the motorway. The low top gear meant the engine was very vocal above 60mph. It was also susceptible to side winds. But if you use mainly round town you'll be fine.
Also if you have to buy spares from the dealer, get prices off a few.
Autoworld at Chesterfield for instance, are almost double the prices of Montys in Sheffield.
  • Thank you. x

OH driving polo to garage this morning and engine managment light has gone off as he is driving it! Will still get the car checked, am losing confidence in it to be honest.

I don't do much motorway driving so as you said mostly town driving will be fine. Have seen a couple of them for around £1300 (2003 models) with service history, so if I could get half that amount for the Polo, it wouldn't be a massive amount to find to swap, another good point is that it's chain driven so no cambelt to worry about :)
  • polo been checked out, apparently a brake pedal switch which caused this, think the brakes must be sticking a bit in the colder weather.

might wait until after Christmas now to change it, I don't want to rush into anything - gives me plenty of time to save up a bit and look for a good Ignis.

I cant recommend a Corsa, as ive had one for 6 years, in that time its had all four suspension springs replaced (and belive me i drive very slowely over road bumps) The gear selector was changed,as the car failed to engage just about any of the gears... the engine management light would come on at around 60-70mph and lose power,( not exactly brilliant on a motorway).... my front wipers packed in (siezed up) plus the intermitent wipers refused to work once work had been done to free the wipers.

Good things about my corsa ;)...the clock kept perfect time, and the engine never once burnt a drop of oil in that time.

Candykisses, I have the sister car of the polo, a skoda fabia, and absolutely love it, I did have a wee problem with the engine management light coming on in the bad weather last year, can be something and can be nothing, mine was just caused by the cold weather and something to do with the airflow or something like that. Took it to garage, he reset it, it popped back on again, went off again as soon as it started thawing.

Maybe the EM thingy is a bit sensitive on them?
