0870 numbers used to be revenue sharing but that was removed by OFCOM on 1 August 2009. The move was made following numerous complaints to OFOCM by groups (such as MSE) and the general public.

Since then, the price of geographical calls has rapidly increased, so that the cost of calling UK geographical numbers is now more than what 0870 calls cost at the time of the 0870 revenue sharing ban! The set-up fee has also dramatically increased to the now 13.1p (BT). The other major players have all followed suit.

If BT can share revenue on 0845 numbers when calls to 0845 numbers cost just over 2p/minutes, why is it that UK national calls cost so much? The discount call providers are still charging about the same for UK national as they did 2-3 years ago!
