Toddler choking warning

  • St John Ambulance run training courses for the general public all over the country.

There's even one specifically for incidents involving toddlers & young children. They only cost about £25

A little girl near me recently died having her school dinner. She apparently choked on a sausage. It was in front of the other kids, dinner ladies etc. It was horrific. My son is nearly the same age and it frightened me to death.

  • Oh my god that's scary. Think I'm going to buy a first aid book that covers emergency situations so at least I've got some knowledge of what to do.

yes, of course first aid is a good idea but i found that my brain was full of cotton wool when my boy was choking

    That's my problem too.

My brain turns to mush :o

I think when its someone you love its harder to distance yourself.

    That's such a sad story. :(
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...
  • How sad..

I know a friend told me recently about a friend's LO choking on a grape and he was 3! Sadly he died. This is more common than we think.

This is the thing I most dread happening above anything else. I think I would go to mush too if something like this ocurred too. If we have a bit more knowledge about First Aid for babies though, we have a fighting chance of doing something. A first aid/medical book was on my Xmas list this year.

Check Surestart in your area too as they often run FREE first aid courses. I was signed up for one towards the end of last year-sadly it was cancelled due to few numbers can you believe? This has prompted me to chase up another one.

    Thanks OP

The other thing I wanted to say was the number of times I see LO's running around eating food, rather than sitting eating which cannot be a good thing at all.

i have a four year old and two year old i heard years ago about a 3 year old choking to death in a supermarket on a grape it was on the news and they had an expert say that the grape is the perfect shape to close off the air supply and becuase of the shape hard to bring up or remove in an emergancy.
I had to have a word with my little girls nursery recently as on
her enrolement form i stated NO GRAPES in the section that asks if she has any alergies she's not alergic but i couldn't take the chance they might not cut them up anyway at a recent picnic they gave her grapes (they were cut up) but that not really the point.

Thanks Debt free chick I have looked at this but the nearest one to me is around 40 miles away! :(

With luck though I work at a nursery and I am hoping to get some first-aid training shortly!
(stepping onto my soap box now)
I feel that we as parents need to say to our doctors or dare i say health visitors that as parents we ALL need training in first aid. There have been times when my dd's have hurt themselves and I didn't know what to do. I went to the Brownies donkeys years ago and this is where I learnt the recovery position and some simple first aid.
Just poped into my head that the government are changing the school curriculum so why do they not teach children today first aid in there "social skills" or pse classes at senior school? This would be better that algebra!
(steps down off of soap box)
Sorry to moan but something should be done for the health and wellbeing of our children!

Personally, speaking as a mum of 2 dd's I feel that we should ALL have to know some basic first aid for kids. perhaps it should be part of a post / pre natal course?
When my DD1 choked on a bread stick at her 1st birthday party I wouldn't have known what to do but thanks to something i had seen on tv i had a vauge idea on what to do.

    Absolutely right.

My youngest started choking on a meatball when she was 5 - as a qualified first aider, I knew what to do and she was ok thankfully. DD1 was not impressed though when the offending meatball shot out and landed next to her dinner plate:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Wasn't laughing at the time though - in fact, it was quite scary.
There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter
  • I still cut the grapes up for DD1 and she is 13, slightly paranoid I know
My greatest worry are those hard round lollipops, mine are banned from having those, a friends daughter was sucking one it came off the stick and she choked to death.
At my DD1 school they do a focus day, one day per term, the last focus day they taught them all basic first aid, she now knows CPR the recovery position ect
