monthly cleaning??

  • I can't see that you need to defrost the freezer every month. It can't get that bad in a month and I think it would be inefficient for the freezer to be on/off then on/off monthly.

    I only do my freezer yearly :eek:

  • Our 4-6 week jobs are:

    woodwork through house damp clothed-20mins
    airing cupboard tidied-10mins
    bathroom cupboard tidied up-10mins
    under stairs sorted (ebay stuff shoved under there)-20mins
    windows cleaned inside-20mins
    tiles in bathroom steam cleaned-25mins
    lounge glass uplighters washed-5mins
    check fire alarms and hoover them-5mins

    Total 1hr 55 mins

  • I would never wash my curtains every month. the rest I kind of do as I go along.

    I don't plan to, but I find that I only ever seem to wash all of the curtains the day before the inlaws come down from Scotland to visit. I have no idea why but it seems to just happen that way.
    It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

    Mine I do inside windows weekly, a set of curtains etc week, WM and TD inside weekly usually, freezer defrost monthly (only small keeps it running right) inside cupboards in kitchen fortnightly (do one side one week the other the next) cars bins etc etc all done weekly. Suppose depends on the individual really. Think most of mine gets done weekly now.
    One day I might be more organised...........:confused:

    How do you all find the time to do these jobs so often??

    As well as working full time I have studying for an Open Uni degree to do, meals to cook every night (OH has M.E. and can't help much), and I'm a founding member of a mountain bike group who ride usually twice a week, so with all that how am I supposed to fit in housework AND have some time to rest??

    That's a genuine question by the way... :)

    the housework goes by the board - I work on the basis that as long as the kitchen and bathroom are hygienic, a bit of dust never hurt anyone.
    All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

    I won't pretend it can be done in no time, because it can't. But I do think it's worth setting some time aside and then however much time that is, trying to make things as easy as possible to do so that you can fit in as much as possible in that time.
    I have to confess I never used to do much housework ( I hated it ) until things were so bad they were either a severe health hazard or an embarrassment or both. Then it took so long and it was such hard work to get the things clean I couldn't be bothered to do it all again quickly and the cycle just repeated itself.
    However, I've always meal planned. I love cooking but I really dislike the sitting down and working it all out ( I spend about 20 mins once a week doing it ). I've always found though that it saves far more time and grief than that over the week, just buy what's on the list, get stuff out the freezer the night before, cook it - no humming and hawing in Tesco about what to eat, once I've spent that 20 minutes I never have to think about it again.
    Since coming on here I decided to take the bull by the horns and do the same with the cleaning.
    Everything is written down for each day, split into things I do every day, things I do weekly, 6 weekly and 6 monthly. Last thing at night I write down a list in a page to a day A5 diary and then the next day just get on with what's on the list. It sounds obsessive ( it probably is ) but I don't get sidetracked then. I can't say I enjoy the actual cleaning but I love scoring off the jobs in the diary and I am beginning to get much more of a sense of pride in what I am doing.
    It is undeniably a huge effort to get the house to the stage where everything is clean enough to just need a swoosh over and I think that's what takes the time initially, because on top of the quick cleaning schedule every day you've still got to tackle the neglected jobs as well. And it also took me ages to make up a schedule in the first place ( and it would have taken much longer if it hadn't been for Moggins ( thanks Moggins by the way!:T ). But, like the meal planning, I am sure it is worth it.
    At the moment I'm spending too much time cleaning for my liking but that's because I haven't quite reached the stage where everything is clean enough to keep ticking over yet. However, I have definitely noticed that the rooms I have managed to get going really are so much easier and quicker to keep clean.I don't think it takes any longer doing a little bit every day than one big effort once in a blue moon and there are two big advantages - it doesn't need nearly as much elbow grease so it's done far quicker and it does give you a feeling of calm and relaxation when the house looks lovely all the time. I reckon that once I get everything up to speed I could keep the cleaning schedule going on an hour a day. I think that's time well spent. Oh and a third advantage - I've lost weight doing it, lots of calorie burning!

    Oh dear, now I feel really bad. I washed my net curtains the other day and they were really grubby. Looked OK at the window but the muck that came out of them when I washed them was embarrasing!

    Then I thought "I really should wash the curtains too". I then did a quick mental calculation of how long the curtains have been up (they haven't been washed since new) and I'm too embarrassed to tell you how long, but suffice to say it's years! :eek:

    And people on this thread are talking about washing curtains once a MONTH! :embarasse
