Not an I won, more an I want to win (question for the exprienced compers out there)

Hi there, I'm very new to this comping world, started at the beginning of the month. However I do have a question for you all if that's ok. I thought this would be the best place to post it as if you are on this bit, you clearly know what you are doing! ;)

I know that the majority of the comps out there are around because the company wants to get your details for marketing etc in the future and ultimately to add us to mailing lists. And so with this in mind, do any of you have any thoughts about whether you have an increased/decreased chance of winning if you select/deselect that you want to be on their mailing list? If that makes sense?! Haha. It sounded logical in my mind...

Anyway, the reason I ask is that I am ticking left right and centre that they can contact me again and I have a VERY busy email inbox now!

So then expert compers everywhere, thoughts on a postcard please (aka reply to thread)... what are you experiences?
Here we go again - advents! So far... an alarm clock, a brothers ladies t-shirt, a brothers flag and pringles mini speakers.

Here's to a successful comping 2012 for everyone! And as always a huge thank you to everyone that posts!

    It makes no difference.

Promoters do 1 of 3 things:-
    a) Make it compulsory to receive marketing and you must still be receiving it to win a prize.
    b) Make it compulsory to receive at least one newsletter but you can unsubscribe at any time and still win a prize.
    c) Make it totally optional.

It might seem strange to some, but companies choose (c) because they want to make a good impression, and sending out unwanted emails is a sure way to make you look on their company less favourably.

I've won many prizes where I have chosen "no marketing", and I'm sure many others on here have as well.

I've mentioned this before somewhere, but companies don't really care who wins their prizes as long as hundreds or thousands enter their comp - thus visiting their sites and seeing their adverts.
  • thanks for asking this OP cause ive often wondered the answer to that question and in dry spells like im having now i often think of ticking those boxes to try to up my chances so thank you to one eye for clearing up that we dont have to tick them

I wondered this when I started comping but I really don't think it makes any difference.

I always tick 'no' to everything that I can, in the 2 and a half years that I've been comping, apart from the odd dry spell that everyone seems to get, I've had a fairly steady win rate including a couple of 'big' wins.

    Good luck.

I always tick no contact if I have that option and I do very well from comping, you could of course set up a comping only email address if the spam is annoying you, I have a gmail account for this purpose and never had a problem, some spam is par for the course, for me anyway its a small price to pay - good luck with your new hobby, perseverance and entering as many comps as possible is key to winning for me, oh and a bit of luck too;)
Thank you for this site Martin
The time for change has come
    Good luck for the future
  • Thank you for all of your comments guys, it is a relief to know I can start saying no to all of the emails, it's driving me mad! haha. One last question for you all though, how have you all set up your signatures?? I can't work out how to do it, I'm sorry to be thick...

  • I sometimes tick yes to marketing...and a few times Ive had some really good marketing offers that Ive made use of..and further comps that Ive entered..Ive won from both entering to receive marketing and not..I dont believe it matters either way, although I do switch betwenen my comping email and my personal...lately only winning on my personal live account x
It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Click onto User CP. This is in the line of options that start with Main Site, Forum, User CP, Community, New Posts, Forum Search, Quick Link, Log Out.

Then look on the left hand options and there is an Edit Signature option.

I also always tick (or untick) the marketing boxes and have won quite a bit over the past year or so :)

Kiddacodd - By looking at your signature, you seem to have had a fab *first* month with comping so well done to you! :T
