  • My middle sone has eczema and he scratches something awful at night. I got him a really low tog duvet (a 2tog, I think it was) and turned the heating down in his room. That has made a huge difference. I also switched to Surcare. But it is expensive though. I'm thinking about making my own laundry gloop.
I tried Ecover but found that made him worse.

    Oh, and moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
  • It is trial and error, like many have said already surcare is very good and they also do a fabric softener.

We also had success with Fairy non bio tablets and conditioner.

My ex used to do that drove me up the wall! But I did feel bad for him, I'd always wash everything in non bio, extra rinse it and always cream him up before bedtime. the source of his problems was the weather in this country, all the time he worked abroad his skin was ok. he used to use sunbeds to try and ease the itching.

My son has very bad excema. I was told by the dermatologist to use Surcare or Ecover. I wasn't to use any fabric softener though, even if it was Surcare or Ecover. She said preferably Surcare, but if I couldn't get that then to use Ecover. I tried Ecover but didn't like the smell at all. I know it's supposed to be perfume free but there was a smell to it.

The Co-op is the only place where I can buy big boxes of Surcare powder.

I find no real difference not using conditioner in his washing though. I thought everything would be stiff, but I give everything a good steam when I iron it (kills any bacteria as well, as a lot of things can't be washed any hotter then 40C). I also give his clothes an extra rinse, and I steam them as well in the washer (I find it helps getting blood and cream stains out).

I bit off topic, but organic cold pressed almond oil and switching to a natural shampoo got rid of my excema.

These articles are interesting, though a bit off-topic. I suffer from rosacea, skin sensitivities and nasty food intolerances which can also send my skin mad. I very much sympathise- I used to wake up in scratches and blood before I sorted out my diet.

As for washing sheets: if there is blood on them, soak in the bath with a little COLD water and salt. Hot water will make the blood coagulate and set, so cold water to remove the stains. Then wash at 90 degrees with no detergent. 90 will kill most nasties, and no risk of washing powder allergy.
  • Try getting you OH to take an antihistamine before bed - helps to control itching. Also ensure all creams, shampoos etc are free from SLS (sodium laureth sulphate). Unfortunately it's in a lot of eczema stuff.
Liquid soap works for my dad- for some reason can't get non bio washing powder in Spain!
