Hi I went self employed on the 1st April 2011 and the tax office said that my first tax form to be filled in would be for the year ended 2011/2012 but I have been sent a tax form for the year ended 2010/2011.
Now I have not been working for the 2 years prior to going self employed so was only self employed for the last 6 days of that tax year.
Does anyone know how I fill out the tax form? Do I put employed?
I have no costs associated with the tax year 2010/2011 or do I put not employed and just fill out the 2011/2012 tax form as normal?
Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you registered as self-employed starting on 1 April 2011 then you are required to complete a Tax Return for the 5 days you were self-employed. If in fact there was no income or expenses then complete a self-employed page also with zero for income and expenses and put an explanatory note in the additional info.0

Ah thanks, will that be ok then as the tax office said that the first few days of self employment should be entered on the 2011/2012 year as the income didn't start until late April but there would be little expenses to put through.
They said it was better to roll over these few expenses and then there would be an accurate set of accounts for the first year.
I just wasn't sure if the tax office would question zero being put into all the boxes or not.
Thanks for your help.0 -
As long as you explain that registered as starting on 1/4/11 but received no income and had no expenses until 2011/12 then that will be fine.
If you were employed prior to going self emp then this should be entered on an employment page.0 -
No not employed before that at home with the kids. That is great thank you will get on and fill it out as the due date is soon.
Will be along with more questions shortly
