Swinton car insurance

Hi, first time posting on here so hopefully somebody will help me out!

Two weeks ago the engine of my car ceased and after having it inspected by an AA mechanic and two mechanics at local garages they deemed it unfixable and said I would need a whole new engine. I can't afford that at the minute and as I am insured on my partners car we have been car sharing. I decided to sell my car as spares and repairs and a few days later realized I would need to cancel my car insurance policy.

I rang up Swinton and they said because I had a cash back deal when I took the policy out, I would have to pay £324 to cancel it. I said I couldnt afford to pay it all and is there no way I can continue with my direct debits until it is paid and she said no. She said the only way I could do that was if I transferred it to another car. I cant afford a another car and I can't transfer it to my partners car as that already has a policy taken out on it. She told me to think about it for a few days and she would ring me later in the week.

I went on holiday before she rang me back and returned last night to a letter saying that they are cancelling my policy and that will take effect in seven days and that I would have to pay the cancellation fee as well as any other monies owed (the letter was dated 13th).

I'm going to ring them first thing in the morning but I don't know what to do! I still don't have a car to transfer it over to... I could try and get the money but that would mean borrowing again. Im also worried as them cancelling my policy will mean I will have to declare it on future car insurance quotes and mean I will pay more!

Sorry if it sounded like I was rambling, I would just like to know where I stand before I speak to them tomorrow!

Thanks!

If you don't have a car and have no intention of getting another one and it will be less expensive to leave the insurance running then tell Swindlers you have changed your mind and are getting your car fixed.

I left my old insurance running for 6 months after scrapping my car as it was cheaper than canceling when I bought a new car.

Just remember if you have automatic renewal to cancel it.

    Thanks for your reply.

I'd thought of doing that but will they not be able to check with the DVLA if the car is still in my name? Or do they not have the authority to do that?

Depends if you actually said "I want to cancel" when you originally phoned them, if you did then you're stuck.

I said I wanted to enquire about canceling and asked about cancellation costs.

Then you should get in back in touch and tell them you didn't request the policy be cancelled.......for some bizarre reason you can continue to pay insurance for something you no longer have.
