Query over car deposit / cooling off period

I got a bit over-excited on Friday, and, at home, signed an order form and faxed it to the broker for a particular new car on a personal contract hire. I didn't realise that 'privacy glass'- which was on the details of the spec- meant that the back windows are blacked out- which I definitely don't want. The paperwork wasn't the full finance documentation, but it said would be liable for £1,000 if I cancelled. I haven't handed over any money.
My ideal scenario would be for them to find me another car without the privacy glass. If they can't or won't, would they actually be able to come after me for the £1,000 if I don't go ahead?

  • Btw when I mentioned the problem to the broker he said that, yes, the spec definitely included privacy glass and that I'd signed a contract confirming that...
  • You will probably get exactly what you signed up for.

My understanding is that there is no cooling off period if signed in your own home, but could be wrong.

BTW....what did you expect 'privacy glass' to be?

Privacy glass is not totally blacked out. Its a dark tint.

Keeps the car cooler in the summer and stops people seeing whats in the back.

Why would you not want that?

We have privacy glass in the back of hubbys car and it doesn't make any difference to seeing out, but difficult for people to see in. It wouldn't make me cancel a car.

Its likely, due to having only a faxed "order" not completed on his business premises, the dealer will keep you dangling for a while before giving you a rude timewaster brush off.
